When you decide to play SL, you have to leave your gaming mindset at the "door" so to speak and take on the SL mindset, which in my opinion is.....

You are no longer playing a game, you are actually living your second life, a virtual life.

If you are lost and confused, imagine how a baby in first life must feel.

If you need help, or just want to chat, or have questions, please feel free to contact me either in IM here in the forums, or look me up in game and if I am online send me an IM there (or even if I am not online, send me an IM I will get it in my email)

If you are not sure how to find someone in SL, do the following steps while in the game...

click the search button at the bottom of the screen, then the people tab, then type in that person's name and if you typed it correctly it will show them in the list (and only them since they are the only one with that name) that is first and last name heh

if they are/are not online it will indicate as such, then you can just click on the send IM tab on their profile to the right.

Good luck, and I hope you have a wonderful second life experience.

Remember I am just an IM away.

Gaming mindset?! :D I've never played a computer game in all the years I've been using a computer, and that's a very long time. (Yea, go figure. However, it's true.) Given that, I don't think a "gaming mindset" is my problem. (Well, I did play Microsoft's solitaire a couple of times before uninstalling it.)

Thank you for your offer of assistance, R.A. I'm still finding Second Life far more frustrating than fun at all. I just fly around the same airspace each time I login.

I'm now stuck on Help Island and have no idea what to do next. :( I've some money somewhere and don't even know how to access and/or spend it. Where is all the fun I've heard about at/with Second Life? I think someone hid it from me. :)

Signed,
Lost somewhere in Second Life [still]

BTW, thanks for the pointer from someone to the Foolish Frost reading. I read it in its entirety and essentially finished no better off than I started. It's not at all the technical information or "how to" written instructions I'd love to have. Quite frankly, I don't suggest it for newbies (or anyone really), but that's my clueless opinion.

My husband can't see the attraction to the game either. He didn't have the patience for learning anything in-world (but he *is* ADD so that might explain a thing or two) and I've tried to walk him through some basic things.

Abba, thank you. :) I've looked, but have not yet seen you in SL.

Finally, some possible insight! Also being *very* ADD myself, maybe that is at least part of the problem. Nothing happens quickly enough in SL to be of very much interest, at least not for this ADD newbie. Maybe I'm going 120 mph and SL is stuck at 55 mph.

You might get more use out of this forum if you ask a specific question. What activity exactly do you want to do that you can't do?

"I'm now stuck on Help Island " - id you mean you haven't left the Orientation Island and Help Island areas yet? If so, you might want to proceed on to the main grid, if you are bored and don't find it useful to be in the starting area. If you mean the public Help Island, that you can be in after you enter the main grid, that's another matter.

If you need to read the instructions while on the john you might consider using a laptop. ;)

Hi Zen. I think that SL is learned best by using it and not by reading the manuals. Just go bopping around and hitting buttons at randam to see what they do. That's the way I learned about SL. You can always IM me for help if you ever find me online.

Thank you for the offer of IM'ing you. You are kind. :) I may well take you up on your offer -- if I can ever figure it out.* (Jeesh, IM'ing is supposed to be a no-brainer.) However, "bopping around" for over two weeks has gotten me nowhere so far. That is why I prefer reading what there is to know instead of wasting time and money finding out the [very, very] slow way.

* In fact, what do I do with the following? I logged in and nothing happened. See below the message I received from some other nice person:

From: someone
Kokoro Fasching has offered you inventory in Second Life. Log in to accept or decline the offer.
[18:55] Kokoro Fasching: Come check out the park, ride the train or the bumper cars.. ;)

BTW, this is *not* my first virtual world, but it is the one that has been most exceptionally difficult and even impossible, it seems. :(

I do not know where I am, but I do know I am nowhere that I might want to be. However, I don't even know enough to know where else I might want to be.

What is the main grid? Where is it and how does one get there?

And last, we both know laptops just don't work well with some certain tasks. ;)

(And, why isn't there e-mail notification of forum responses? I requested them in the control panel. I'm not getting them as I do in all other forums in which I participate across the net. It's a hassle to check in here for responses instead of being notified of them.)

Something. Anything. Now, I am doing absolutely nothing in SL and cannot find anywhere to do anything else.

That's it. I quit. This is zero fun.

A few weeks ago, I placed $25 (real money) in an account somewhere. I have no idea where it is or how to use it. Might someone like to buy me out. I'll sell the $25 at fifty cents on the dollar.

I now just want out of Second Life so I can get on with my real life.
