XStreet and Societal Beneficial freebies

Anything useful to builders that's (ideally) full perms and is yours to distribute. Tools, scripts, textures and the like, but also any full perms examples of how to do stuff.

It's been going for about a year now; several of us regulars on Builders Exchange thought we were always giving out the same free stuff when people asked for things in the group, and wouldn't it be handy to put everything in the one place and direct people there.

No.. large ones are very welcome too; all I meant was that, if anyone does have any spare land they'd like to donate, Matty can usually find a use for smaller plots, too. We've tried to build some redundancy into the system so that -- as happens from time to time -- if some land we're using suddenly stops being available at short notice, we can redistribute stuff and keep the network of repositories open while we try to replace the land we've lost.

I don't have the skills to do it, but I do have resources available. (ie a webserver, and that evil $$ stuff)

All I need is a scripter capable of doing it, any suggestions?

Well apparantly not, I hoped for some input about items, but it seems that I am quite alone in it. No problem, not all my ideas rock Carry on, I will leave the thread and discard the idea.

I was actually thinking a category called "free tools" that would encompass building objects, scripts, mega prim packs, SALT HUD, MLP, etc...

These items could be left free or set to something like L$10. Being able to send someone a direct link to one of these items is pretty handy and really shouldn't go away.

I'm delivering about 10-20 copies of my preloaded AO per day, half of that on xstreet...

All that LL will do is start something and then lose interest and abandon it like every other community project. Look at the sad condition of our content creation forums with scrambled and deleted files and no formatting and it is going to be archived and left to get stale and irrelevant. Look at the abandonment of the old wiki that made everyone start all over again from scratch. Look at the infohubs that still deliver notecards that were obsolete in 2006 even after superficial renovating. Look at LL's sad deserted inworld marketplaces that their lotteries can't fill. Look at live help and greeters and mentors. LL is not a fit guardian of the community trust, it needs to keep its hands off this and let the residents handle our own affairs.

It is basically a script that fetches mega pirms from a server on demand.
Wear it and say "/1 request 20 30 0.1" and it will try to find a matching mega prim and send it to you. In the example, 20X30X0.1 meters. If it does not find exactly what you want it will offer a list of prims close to what you requested. Probably 20X30X0.25 or 20X30X0.5 in this case.

Besides having virtually every mega prim ever made at your disposal, it also eliminates the need to keep them all in your inventory.

I hope people will use it - I thought about deeding land for that purpose also, but, it's a lot of tier to pay. Unless there's a huge interest I probably won't do that. The benefit of a group is that it costs no one a dime. Well, other than the L$ 100 to start it.

Btw if anyone would like to be an officer in said group, send me a NC in world preferably. It will be necessary to have a few hands. My nightmare would be if someone used it to distribute stolen goods, so, many eyes, etc. I'm also very open to ideas on the practical issues of all the above.

Kewl. Even though I belong to several freebie groups (FabFree, free*style, magic faraway tree), they all focus mainly on fashion and are (mostly)female focused.

It would be good to have one that's more general and also community minded.

Tossing this out for some feedback.

There is a tour hud system available that can link multiple locations, provide LMs on a sequential or random basis. Kiosks deliver a free hud to users and the back end server sends automatic updates to hud users when they are worn so everything keeps in synch.

The current version supports up to 300 locations, more than enough I would think for true freebie (as opposed to promotional freebie) outlets. Although parallel systems could provide separate channels if necessary.

Though ultimately such a system would need to be group controlled to ensure continuity, if there is sufficient interest I am prepared to set up a proof of concept system and provide an in world location for the server and 'home' location.

Your thoughts here or in world through notecard/IM appreciated.

There are an awful lot of talented, smart, creative, selfless, and dedicated people in SL. If people pool these natural resources, they can not only circumvent the fallout from this but come up with something that works even better.

So, yeah. I think not just one solution but many. If coordinated (teamwork), so much the better.

Players in other MMO's survive without freebies, so will players in SL, LL already give everyone a Library full of freebies to start with.
Some people wouldn't care till there were more freebies than products for sale.

Yep in WoW & CoH I had to work and grind to get cool stuff, there weren't just boxes of free enhancements, weapons and armour just lying around in every store

Is it too obvious to point out that this is not WoW or CoH, and that's what people like about it?

How could people not like a world with so much free stuff, it's probably one of the main props holding SL together by now I guess.

It's getting like RL where you can just live on Govco and Charity handouts if it seems to hard to try supporting yourself.

We need to provide more support for the non-spending non-creative types we need for login numbers now we are losing our bot population.

The Vengeance megaprim Collection is still available and will become a L$3-bee when it needs to. It will continue to be available for free in-world.

Same for my other freebies, but they're a lot less popular than the megaprim collection.
