Hi Angel,
I think most people will realise the humour in the article and take it with a pinch of salt. Some may condemn SL and turn their back on it but even they I very much doubt will be able to miss the increasing number of mentions SL is getting in the press and when they see the likes of American Apparel, IBM, Reuters, Toyota and more, appearing in those articles will stop to think "What on earth are they going into SL for?" and actually read these other reports.

You said it. He didn't research the subject for long enough. How many of us, sorry, you, came in and set up shop on the first day? I think most will realise this was only a 'quick dip' into fantasy and hey yes, it might be just a male thing. He's male I assume and so will a lot of his readers.
I doubt if his article has done SL much damage and out of those who come flooding in for the sex, some will get bored and leave, others will explore and discover their fullest potential.
A lot of those put off will probably find a 'real' article soon.

I actually don't agree with anything he wrote (and anyone who knows me, knows I'm the Captain Obvious Smart Mouth), no matter how he presented it.

A limited 4 hour experience, especially with a tour guide only showing off places *she* knew about (not to impune her, she sounds really sweet, but may not have known about the puzzle sim or such), isn't exactly enough to write an article about that tries to sum up SL.

Ah, but Darlin, this guy was writing in a very tongue-in-cheek sort of way. I laughed through the entire article, because frankly, this is almost word-for-word how a good friend of mine experienced SL the first time. He didn't get it. Joel didn't get it either, and hence we see an article that comes across as rude.

I'm starting to suspect that the vast majority of humans don't get SL. There are billions of humans on this planet, but only about 30,000 residents of Second Life. (i'm not measuring accounts here. I'm doubling the normal logged-in number to account for both sides of the world) If there were a billion users of SL, I'd go elsewhere. I'm sad that some people just don't "get it", but then the corners of my mouth turn slightly upwards...

I love this world.

Well I know that silly!

I wasn't condeming his writing, merely opposing it, but no one has still answered the original question dangit! lol

I don't think many writers at all get it, to be honest. We have glowing reviews of a brave new front from CNN, and how sparkly SL is, we have people who write about the sex. I just wish REAL reporters wrote about the REAL SL. (I.E. Crashes, server loads, user base opinions, etc.) And I wish some profiled people who aren't making an arm and a leg, but are still being useful to SL.

I agree Bilbo, I doubt seriously the article did any Damage to SL as such.I wasn't concerned at all that it would.
The Damage that was done was to the credibility of Time, and the journalistic Integrity of the Author. I used to write articles and Edit for some Amatuer Publications. Hardly Reuters by any standard, but if someone had presented me with such a Poorly written, and Obviously Poorly researched article i would have rejected it. Honestly, it had the timber of a Highschool essay begun at 11:30 sunday night, and due at 8:30 Monday Morning. ANYONE has the right to write on SL from thier perspective, and Publish, whether that Perspective on SL is complimentary or not, BUT Anyone so writing has a Journalistic Responsibility to KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. This Author did Not live up to that responsibility to his readers, and that is what i find disappointing, Especially when there were so Many Well researched articles out there on SL that have already been written.

As i said, I would expect this sort of article had SL been a New Phenomenon in the Public View. But It Isn't. We have had International exposure in all forms of news media, and the time for this sort of Ill Informed writing has Long Passed.

Angel.

Time magazine article

I usually do not post in this forum but after reading the Time article and some opinions in this forum I could simply not resist. The article made me laugh and honestly I do not see how anyone cannot notice the ironic angle. Maybe some people just need something to ramble about, I guess. As a journalist you can never write an article that appeals to everyone´s taste. There is always going to be someone who does not like it. As a matter of fact that is exactly what a good journalist should be looking for. An article is only good when it creates polemic and when it causes people to react either angry or happy about its content. I am pretty sure that a journalist like Joel knew exactly how to focus an article for his key audience and that his key audience is not represented by SL residents and even less by the people that write in this forum. So, come on, the article gives SL some free PR. People will not remember the exact contents of the article, but they will remember second life and that is what counts. By the way, I think that Cristal was an excellent guide to him. I wish I had met somebody like her when I entered SL for the first time and none of us knows for sure to what other places she also took him that he did not mention in the story, since he obviously focused on a sexual angle. By the way, Cristal does exist and I IMed her and have to agree with Joel. She is not only pretty but really funny and smart and seems to be a really nice person. I would propose her as an official tour guide to the Lindens :).

great article! yeah....what IS it with all the "Hun'ning!" !! :)

ok i admit it i do "hun" a lot. in my case i use it to say "i see You sre there but at the moment im busy so give me a sec to answer you" is there by shortend to "just a sec, hun."

to answer the other question:why is everyone so not happy with the article?

imo, many will read that, and go haha funny, hmmm, i cna go into this virtual world and buy a penis? i can go into this world and have as much sex as i want? i can go into this world and be just as big an ass i wish to be and still have sex?

get the picture?

funny as it may be, and yes i did read it again after i had coffee, too many horndogs wil only see two things in it: penis and sex(cheap horndogs will see $5, penis and sex)

case in point: while sitting around our club one night after a set, we had a patron, relativly new, ask us point blank and with out so much as a howdee doo: "How do you "fornicate"? as you can see im new, and thats all i want to know."

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

No need for Joel Stein for that, though it just demonstrates he's exactly right on the mark.

a typical article for a rookie journalist. I give him extra points for grammar, punctuation and spelling names properly.
