I can't find the recent thread talking of avatars without tags. Apologies if this has already been answered, or if it's common knowledge!
I just met and had a very nice chat with an avatar without a tag. It turns out that she was typing in Japanese. Lucky for me, she had a translator program handy, to translate between us. So, people without tags must just have tags in an alphabet our client doesn't know how to render. Nice to have the mystery solved. At least for me it was a mystery.
If someone without a tag and without a translator nearby is asked a question or talked to in a more distant language like English, it's certainly understandable if they don't respond! I'm thinking that a translating program would be a good thing to have in my inventory.

I dunno about this one... I've run into Japanese players, and I could see their tags just fine. I've also run into English speaking residents, and I could not see their tags.

Oops, yes, that's the thread I was trying to remember; thanks, Sindy. Well, that situation was rather different I see, the tagless avatars in that other thread acting rather hostile. I guess whether you see the tag depends on which font is used. There are probably at least several font choices for any alphabet. I know that's true for Cyrillic. So particular fonts won't show up in the client- for instance, maybe some Japanese fonts show up, and others don't. Maybe some griefers are aware of a font they can hide behind. -Fo

all depends if you have the text codes for diff languages for windows. I hear apple streams nearly everything text wise.
I had 2 years or NOT reading my native fonts and UI was a mess. But it seems its mostly fixed. But the tranlation codes at times are in the infiant stage of sl growth.

Last time I checked you could only have non-western language support if you owned Microsoft office or purchased a font for $100, because SL was hard coded to use a particular unicode font. Unles sthat has changed most people can't see Japanese text, and that might be messing up tags.

I can now ( for the past 5 months now ) read both my native japanese font and english/etc....... No need to buy anything. It all in the UI of sl that was broken for us non apple users. I have no idea what your talking about....
