I Wonder What's Up With The Code Not ever Being Turned Back On?

This whole code being turned off thing is getting a bit annoying. Anyone heard when they are going to turn it back on?

Nope, and there's at least a couple of JIRA issues on it. Have you tried Strife's Grease Monkey script? It works pretty well. :)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

It's stickied at the top of the forums, and I probably should have mentioned it's for Firefox, but here's the simple version:

Install this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748

Then this:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9651

I think you have to restart Firefox in there too.

There's a Firefox extension called Linkification too, but I like Strife's version better. :)

Thanks for posting those, Ann. A couple minutes later I'm no longer having to look at all that markup! :D

EDIT as per below: Thanks, Strife!! :)

EDIT (again): OT->your pic answers the question I was pondering of whether Nekos had two or four ears.

I don't think they will ever fix this. I didn't think they would ever fix it the minute they took it away. That's because they take away stuff, saying they are going to do something about it later, and never do.

I would enjoy being proven wrong.

But why was it taken away in the first place? Was it broken? Are we using it for good instead of evil. Did a German TV reporter figure it was used by pedophiles......?

I could be wrong, but I can't see any reason for having disabled it in the first place. I'm pretty sure it wasn't broken. I don't think it can break.

It's code that gets interpreted by a piece of software, and the software displays links, pics, colors whatever.

My guess is there is some motivation for turning it off, other than it not working. I hate the idea of having to use a certain browser with a certain plug-in to view one page on the internet. I just copy and paste the url's. Though I appreciate the fact that someone took the time to make one. :)

Sneezing wrong while loading up the client can bring down the whole grid.

Personally, I think they want to make the forums so irritating to use that we'll leave it. Don't know us very well, do they?

I know when we had the in world focus meeting, we said, "Bring back the forums" as much as we said, "Simplify the JIRA." Of course, both simply flew right over their heads. *sigh* They don't want the forums, it's as simple as that. It's 'too much work,' that they won't outsource.. and yet they'll give our email addy's to a third party for mass emails.

In fact, this is the only 'game' I go to that doesn't have a fully functional, community oriented, forum. If other places can tame the savage beast, then why can't LL? Oh, right.. that farking Tao of Linden.

Used to be a sticky that said they were taking it off cause they were going to redo the forums or something.

So no, it wasn't broken.

But they removed that sticky as well.

Who knows. Farking Tao of Linden.

I still see the announcement above the stickies.

I guess, in reality the forums are a useful service to us residents rather or not they have the full functionality or not.

Not only a useful service, but a free one. : )

Much of the traffic I have driven has come from my presence on these forums. Not that I'm not pursuing other avenues of exposure, but these forums get a tremendous amount of traffic.

So, I guess I'll just shut up about the BBcode not being enabled.

It's a small thing yes. but small things that happen for no apparently valid reason have always annoyed me, one of my quirks. it goes back to my Dad explaining things with "Because I said so."

i wish they would bring it back, like others here i pretty much knew it was going to be forever before they did, if at all

basicly there was a sticky saying were gonna upgrade something and for some dumb ass reason they needed to turn off BB code, altho from personal experiance this isnt neccacary in anything ive ever upgraded on forum software

so anywho thanks to the lazyness of lindens it probally became something too bothersome half way tru the project, and since theres no management over there, the developer just kinda wandered off to the next half assed attempt of a project

i dont really care what their tao is or how they think they should be running their development teams becuase it effects every aspect of SL, thats why bugs dont get fixed for years, features are never tested and a cupple of days of no BB code has turned into 3 months

its really aggervating and old, try and do anything in the scripting forum and you will quickly see

I suspect it's an attempt to make the forums less friendly, in hopes of scaring people off. If people quit posting here, then they could close them with little backlash. However I don't think their scheme is working so far.

I saw that Torley was actively monitoring the JIRA comments about this issue, so I asked him there to put the announcement back.

It was originally timed to disappear after a month, so it seems Torley thought it would be back by then. Now it's timed to stay until the end of 2007.

According to Torley's comments on the JIRA entry, it was meant to be turned back on quickly, but something went wrong and they don't know when it will be fixed. Torley's pretty forthcoming about it, so I don't doubt him, but I suspect his source may be providing false information.

The fact is that this is common forum software, vBulletin. I don't see anything in it that suggests it's been customized in any way, aside from choosing the settings. I just don't believe that they can't figure out how to fix this.

Can't use URLs or Slurs in forum.
07-15-2007 13:37
Greetings,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask about this but from what I've read here it seems likely someone can clue me in on what is going on with the forum and why. Please spell it out I suck at acronyms. My problems it that I am not able to use URLs or Slurs in my posts or click the ones in other people's posts here at the forum. Nor can I Enlarge, Underline, nor Color etc the text in my Posts. I've checked all my Bowser Settings they are fine and can't find a location to adjust my forum settings except this option at the bottom of the Reply to Thread Page, which reads (Automatically parse links). Can someone offer me help on how to fix this problem, I'm totally lost here.
Much Thanks, Arda

BBCode is the forum feature that lets you use formatting and linkable URLs. Linden Lab turned off the BBCode in this forum for some reason. It is not a problem with your browser.

There is a workaround if you use the Firefox browser. Strife (one of the resident moderators here) has made a Greasemonkey script that will let you see the formatting and URLs. Check this thread (stickied at the top of this forum) for information on using this workaround:

/327/b2/188445/1.html

You can also see Torley Linden's announcement at the top of the forum.

http://forums.secondlife.com/announcement.php?f=327

The link provided in that announcement will take you to the JIRA entry. Please go there and vote on the issue if you want Linden Lab to turn BBCode in these forums back on so that everyone can see formatting and URLs, even without Firefox.
