I tried to explain to some co-workers what SL is. But how do you explain to someone who only uses the computer as an appliance to google, mail and check ebay that you can grow very fond of someone who you have never met? How can you explain a 3D-world to someone who still thinks 2D is state of the art? Some started to have an unhealthy interest in my SL life. Foolishly, I promised them to install SL at the office to show them, but realized I don't want them in my SL, and I don't want them to know what I do in SL. They know I build, and I might show them some ingame pics of my builds, but that's it. I introduced my best friend to SL though, but he is so crazy about his console that he didn't even bother to have a second look at second life. I think it's better this way Second Life is private, and I won't make the mistake of inviting people again

From: Amity Slade What happens in Second Life, stays in Second Life. Undoubtedly for many that is the case, Amity. However for me and many others in SL our SL lives are an extension of our RL lives. In my case as a musician I use SL as another way to reach an audience and it would be somewhat self-defeating (and impossible given the original nature of my work) if I were to keep RL & SL separate. Sure, I look very different in SL than RL, but that's half the fun of SL

<<Try explaining to friends/family/co-workers that you sell cuddle and sex animations in a virtual world on the internet >> Yeah, or penises. My excitement over SL spills into RL often and I tell people about it, but my lives are different enough that I'd prefer them not to intermingle. Fortunately no one I've discussed this with wants to join SL and play. I've showed SL to my mom and she thought it was cool (she's pretty hip) though she's horrified that my SL business is selling genitalia. She's convinced that I'm breaking SOME kind of law in doing so and that this is going to blow up in my face (pun intended) and cast shame upon her and the rest of my family. The other RL people who know about my SL and biz, just think it's hilarious.

From: Milli Santos Through the fault of my big yap, some people at my work found out that I play Second Life and formed an interest.
How do you feel about introducing your real life friends and coworkers to your online world? I brought my brother into SL this weekend...partly to hang out with him (we live 4 hours away) and partly to ween him from WoW. We only had enough time to get him skin, hair and clothes that weren't n00by...we basically shot him ahead about 6 months just with that! He still seems interested even though we haven't gotten into the meat of things yet. But yeah, I don't do embarassing things in SL...or rather I'm not embarassed by the things I do in SL . My issue with co-workers in SL is not having a place to go away from them! As far as friends, I spin it in various ways to various friends based on how they are and whether or not I'd want them to check it out. Some of my friends would be addicts and some would think it was stupid so I explain it accordingly so they stay disinterested. Otherwise they already know about it and do (or don't) use it already.

My RL husband introduced me to SL. Well....um...actually, he played it and I became interested and also wanted to let all the flirty females know that he was taken in RL and SL (since we're partnered in game). I told a co-worker of mine about it because she's been involved in lots of chat areas on the internet. However, she used it on a laptop and go frustrated with the problems and hasn't logged on in quite some time. But it was fun hanging out with her and showing her around while she did. I also showed my BFF in RL the other week when she was at my house, since I'd talked about it so much. She was very interested, but unfortunately she lives in a very rural area where she can't even seem to get DSL much less a cable connection. However, if she's ever able to get the right internet connection speed, I would love to hang out with her in SL. She's very open minded, and I'm pretty much the same person as far as personality in SL as I am in RL. Just look way hotter in SL!

I've introduced a Number of friends and co workers to SL, but as Yet None of them Know who i am in SL, and i don't go Out of my way looking for them. I have a hard rule about My second Life, i don't let it Interfere with my Real life, and i think it's proper to Not allow my Real life to interfere with my Second Life either.

I talked so much about my SL that I made my father curious. Next thing I know he's logged into SL and calling me on the phone to ask what the h*ll he's supposed to do now. It was amusing for awhile. I dressed him up, he bought wings and boats and had a good time in general.
The fun ended the day he caught me wearing a rather sexy outfit. A girl should NEVER have to listen to her father say "dayyuuummmm you're hot".
Now I've built him a guest house on the ground and he's under strict orders to stay out of my skybox. I also have a special unrevealing baggy sweater and jeans outfit I throw on whenever I see him log on.
Needless to say, I don't mention SL to my friends or family anymore. =)
