Ban lines are annoying for people moving around so it is polite to turn them off when you are not around, I think.
There's also a reverse problem. I want people to come over and look at my stuff. It is being built for the community and to be shared. Many people are very shy to do that, though, fearing they are tresspassing...

Have to agree totally. I have met some of my neighbours and want to meet more. All I've met have been happy to chat and most have become friends.
Ban lines? There's a double plot next to me end to end of utterly undeveloped land. Not for sale. Just undeveloped .. and they put ban lines up. How ludicrous is that?
I got into a right mess yesterday trying to get home from one of my local tours.
