Alright, I'm looking for some serious-minded feedback here (though I expect a bit of sarcastic humor will creep in).
The current MotD's are things like "Want to return to Help Island?......" and "Did you knwo you can zoom on the mini-map by clicking on it?...." and other small tidbits. Some usefull (the mini-map is fro new Residents), and some worthless (who would want to return to HI when it doesn't teach you anything anyway?).
My question (yes I have one) is: What MotD's do you think would benifit the community?
Example, my ideas: "Have questions about scripting? Building? Land ownership? Anything else? Ask your fellow Residents on the Official Linden Forum (url here)."
"Have a problem? Visit the Support Protal (url here) and search through the Knowledge Base (url here), or sumbmit a Support Ticket for further assistance (url here)."
"Visit the JIRA page (url here) to look at features/fixes in the works. Vote for ones you feel should be done first."
Bascially, I'm of the mind that LL should move daily communication like this to be more geared to finding how to FIND the information, rather than on tiny tidbits of information.
Thoughts, ideas, comments?
~Jessy

Actually, I've always been of the opinion that Messages of the Day should be timely - messages about current issues on the grid, events coming up, that sort of thing. Rather than as a Tip of the Day, which is what they seem to have become.

Rather than as a Tip of the Day, which is what they seem to have become. Well, the thing here is I don't know of many events LL does in-world. (Do they do any at all? 0.o ) Resident run events could not be used here. Why? How to pick which are posted? It would turn into who has the most money and we already have that with clssifieds. Though I do believe LL changed the MotD (Message of the Day) for the Fourth SL Birthday Party. Or am I missing your point and you're thinking about something else? What events would be good to put in the MotD? Still on my first cup of coffee so brain just starting to fire over lol ~Jessy

~Jessy Well, I was thinking of big, Linden-sponsored stuff like the birthday party, or upcoming town halls (if they ever still have those!) But other stuff, maybe relating to current known issues would be helpful and would probably cut down a lot on support tickets / blog comments etc.

Oooh, that gives me an idea, I might try coding it up tonight. Basically, when it gives you the option of allowing the sale to anybody, or to a specific user, what if that drop down menu also had a list of the people nearby, so you could select one of them without having to go into the dialog and type their name? And maybe if the land is group owned, it should put your own name in that list too in case you're trying to transfer it out of the group. Sorry, just thinking out loud there.

Anyone remember the flaming LL got on 1st April for their MOtD's? While TPing 'Hi, we are not tping you, we are logging you out'. 'Hi we are deleting your inventory'. etc... What they should have put was 'Hi sorry we are bad, and for keeping you waiting whilst TPing around this borked grid, we have credited your account by 100USD, have a great day'........................ then logged you out

I feel that the MotD should be one of these things:
1) Status of logins/grid if they are borked. Slap up there, "Hi, we're aware of a slowdown of rezzing/teleporting and such. Please do not rez anything from your inventory at this time," would be greatly appreciated.
2) Events that Linden Labs is holding.
3) Major news that affects Linden Labs.
4) And then the 'Did you know?'
4 should only show up if there aren't any of the other three.. but at the current rate, 1 would be the most used if they were aware of the issues!

can take hours to log in sometimes so why not just go ahead and stick 'War and Peace' on the login page, we'll have time to read it before the system decides it is 'unable to connect'

ROFL Porky!
I was just thinking on the lines of book extracts, you know,
"extract 24 of 36 'the moon hovered low over the ocean, a light breeze in the evening air. He put his arms around her and gently slid a hand .." "Your clothes are still downloading, every one will see you appear normally. Have a nice day!"

Many of the MotD's are the same one's they've been throwing up there for years. "Sit on it is not just an insult, you can choose it from the pie menu! Right click and choose SIT to sit on an object" or something similar to that, from memory... LL probably has a revolving que of a few dozen of them and only change anything when something REALLY bad happens or when everyone at the office gets a jolly out of a lame April Fool joke.
It does seem like a prime time to get a message across to the masses as they sit there panting "Let me in let me in let me in dammit!!"
And yes, rather then some silly tidbit of information, directing people on how to find out more about SL would seem like a more useful function for MotD.
Events? nah, then it would be gamed or FIC'd. Ads? Please, isnt SL already full of enough ads?
Good idea Jessy. Too bad no one at LL will pay any attention to it.

A lot things are covered by the blog announcements at the bottom of the login screen. I guess the message of the day should contain basic hints and tips on how to enjoy SL better. Or things like, "always pick up your prims after you're finished playing with them", or "griefing is bad don't do it", you know stuff like that. There should also be an option to turn them off.

From: Jessica Elytis Bascially, I'm of the mind that LL should move daily communication like this to be more geared to finding how to FIND the information, rather than on tiny tidbits of information. Help Island Public is a way to get information. Or more accurately, it's a place to find people who will find information for you. Which is really the target audience of the MOTD. People who are resourceful already know where they can find information, the rest can't be bothered to search 5 seconds for an answer when they can spend 10 minutes looking for someone to answer it for them so HIP is perfect for them. (Anecdote: probably partly responsible for the demise of Live Help was the fact that people refused to use the KB, even when a helper found the article for them and pasted the link. People would rather fight and argue to get the helper to summarize and tell them what it said than to read it for themselves)

From: Jessica Elytis The current MotD's are things like "Want to return to Help Island?......" and "Did you knwo you can zoom on the mini-map by clicking on it?...." and other small tidbits. Some usefull (the mini-map is fro new Residents), and some worthless (who would want to return to HI when it doesn't teach you anything anyway?). That's funny, I loved Help Island. I spent a week there before heading to the mainland, and then went back a month later. The second trip was just as useful, because a lot of things made a lot more sense now that I had some context for them. I like that they put it in the MotD because when I went the first time there was a big sign saying "Once you leave you can NEVER come back!" (which is why I stayed for a week before leaving). I talk to several people a week who ask things that are answered on Help Island, so anything that encourages people to go there is a good thing in my book!
