From: Ylikone Obscure From the fairly short time I've been reading these forums, he/she has insulted many people, myself included (a few times already). In other words, try not to take it personally, it's the way he/she is sometimes.
EDIT - sorry, I am not sure of the gender Yes, I have seen previous posts before and suspect some mental instability is at work there. Is there a mute button on the forums?

1) You fricken Pumpkin people are weird >.> (PS. I want 1k L....XD) 2) I read most of the posts, kinda skimmed through it, didn't expect this many replies o.O but anyway, I like Ceera's view, never said I changed my mind, it's a game XD why does a game have to be won or have goals? Why can't a game just be played because it's fun and addicting? If SL is addicting, which I'm sure A LOT of you know > then can SL be a drug too? How bout a psychodeliac pumpkin! I deserve lindens for that...rofl 3) Thanks for all the sane not flaming posts XD

From: Tegg Bode Is there a mute button on the forums? Why, yes, there is! This forum features a handy tool called an "ignore list" that allows you to block out posts from individuals. Just click on their name and go into View Forum Profile. Look for the text "Add ___ _____ to Your Buddy List." Right next to that will be "Add ____ ____ to Your Ignore List." A handy and useful feature

Believe it or not, if SL vanished tonight, tomorrow we would all still be around. Only thing we would lose is what we made SL to be in our imaginations.
Interesting...."imaginations" Imaginations are things made up that is not real to our senses. To me Sl definitely is not an imagination, it isnt tangible, but its happening..you are alive controlling it and interacting with other live people doing the same. You are involving yourself with it through sight and such....it isnt in your mind.

From: Fenleab Barrett Mmm I believe it's a game...it's got all the same requirements as 1, creativity, thinking, life, a computer that can run it >.> . 1 of the definitions of the word "game" is, "a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators." Well. Real Life has been defined as being a Game too. =) For me, Second Life fits the description of William Gibson's cyberspace. Cyberspace is an internal world...and it's nothing new. Film and television are non-interactive cyberspaces. Dreams are as well. All perceptions of the real world, one's first life, one's second life...third, fourth and beyond are all beheld within our minds. These worlds, including the one we see with our eyes are perceived internally, individually. Second Life is an alternative reality, in the same sense that dreams are an alternative reality, or getting lost in a book, a movie, a television show, a song, an image, a piece of art...and it's no less real than what humans refer to as the Real World...whatever that is...in terms of Einsteinian energy physics... And yet from another point of view, Second Life is just a game where we play with our dolls and doll houses. -infrared

SL is simply a 3d MUCK or MUD.
In computer gaming, a MUD (multi-user dungeon, dimension, or sometimes domain) is a multi-player computer game that combines elements of role-playing games, hack-and-slash style computer games, and social Internet Relay Chat channels. Typically running on a bulletin board system or Internet server, the game is text driven, where players read descriptions of rooms, objects, events, other characters, and computer-controlled creatures or non-player characters (NPCs) in a virtual world. ...

Another extension of the human experience...you make it what you will and you get out of it what you are capable of getting out of it...a lot like life.

Second Life is an online city state, with borders defined by its technology and legal structure. It's not the only one by far, there are others... MUD, roleplay IRC, the Palace, ActiveWorlds... Second Life is just the most advanced of these, advanced enough to have a sandbox economy and be something more than a party line telephone call. However, there seems to be something fundamentally forgettable about all online worlds, something that just isn't tangible enough. I bet many of you reading this thread have never heard of at least one of the examples I've mentioned above. Each online community seems so very important to its participants, and is meaningless to outsiders. Second Life is a dangerous addiction, one that tears people away from time they could spend on improving their real-life financial position and vital social support networks. Second Life is liberation, a Temporary Autonomous Zone where your mind can express what it really identifies itself to be, without the limitations imposed by aging bodies and discriminatory cultural attitudes. One thing I do know for certain, no online world has taken over the Internet yet, and that's why I don't think Second Life will either. The intangibility and the anonymity are ultimately Bad Things for any place that wants to be Real. When nontechnical users with low end computers can host their own simulators and be reached by a cell phone's web browser, maybe then, something like Second Life will be the Internet.

From: Yiffy Yaffle To me it's more like a open canvas where people from all over the real world come in to goof off, grief, scam, gain/abuse power, or run a business. It still has it's freedom to express yourself, but only to a extent of where it begins to piss off other people who don't understand what "your world, your imagination" truly means. Nice piece of writting Yiffy....... But sadly you are right ( Or should I say I agree with you ) ..... And what has LLabs done to correct these issues?????? OH YES Have open signup and even more abusive action happening............"your world, your imagination" which really means. ITS YOUR LIFE WE ( LLABS ) DOn`T CARE.Just file a buse report .....which does not get read or is passed over if the Linden does not like you.........."your world, your imagination" YOUR OWN PROBLEM.....But make sure you pay your monthy tier fee and year fee......

SL can be anything to a person. It is all about how creative that person to use SL as... Some treated SL as a game, a messager, an entertainment center, a learning center, a new business opportunities, a mental-recovery center, place of making frens or re-married again and again or Your Second Life?
To me, whatever it is, as long as you BE realistic and BE honest to yourself, anything is OK.
SL is still best treated as a game. Frankly, i dun want to see any of my frens or my own children turned temselves into Second Life people. It's really scary... hee heee.... Cheers!

Weee! I get to add my two cents!
What is a game? A game is a contest with a set of clearly defined roles and a goal.
By that definition, Second Life can be a game. Consider the scenario where you want to compete with other casino owners to gain the hightest traffic for a particular month. This clearly makes your SL experience a contest.
By the same token, real life is a game, too. One's desire to "keep up with the Jones" or to seek that ever-higher paying job is a goal that is often reached through a series of well-acted strategic moves.
So Second Life is **EXACTLY** like real life: it is what you make of it. And like real life, some "lives" in Second Life are more worthy (to the community) or more productive than others. So maybe we should talk about Second Morals?

I still know of too many people who have NO goal in SL, and just do whatever they want...even a few who just explore & never change thier avs' "clothes", to say its a game with clearly defined rules.
I know of a few specific guys who do nothing but explore...they almost "look the same", they wander around aimlessly, and interect w/ the world.
Now in the REAL world, if they lived like that, they could expect to be out of a job, and homeless by late next month!
