I'm a sociology student, in Second Life about a year and a half.

You can help me to investigate a communication in Second Life, please just fill in the questionnaire (english) -> http://ankietka.pl/ankieta/pokaz/id/13035/communication-in-second-life.html

It's really simple survey, its anonymous, i can see your answers but don't know who answered, it isn't in SL where i could see who completed a questionnaire and gave it to me.

You can also give this link to your friends.

If you have any questions, just IM me in world or ask here.

Thank you for help!

If it's completely confidential, how do you read the answers?

Did you see my comment about the ads in the other thread? It would probably attract more people if you could get rid of the ads. Your university should be able to sponsor you and get you a survey site that isn't full of pop up ads.

Whaa??!! sorry, I didn't have time to take the survey...
.
you can get a fresh domain for less than $10 USD per year in about five minutes...

Sorry if I sound mean, but you are asking for our time.

I always take serious serveys...

My question, Is RA the place to do surveys, i mean they are asking questions..but i thought it was mostly to help people who are having troubles.

Excuse me?

A student..who I'm assuming is doing this for some sort of assignment or research, but doesn't have time to make it seem a little more professional?

I took the survey, and the questions weren't bad I s'pose (I still want to see one with more than male and female please... >.>;) but your attitude is really putting me off here.

We get plenty of people asking us to do surveys, so it gets a bit boring or seemingly pointless, and you don't have time to work on it apparently.

Can I revoke my survey answers?

Wait you want us to take time out of our lives to answer a survey for your student work?

And you can't take time to make a professional effort into the survey?

And it's for a grade, which indicated that you're not really putting much though or effort into your school work.

boycott these stupid things. very few of these are professionally done, or given a modicum of thought to provide any kind of interesting analysis.

I was a little offended first at the "I don't have time for this" comment, but then I wondered if it was a case of something lost in the translation. I am guessing that what Puella meant was "I don't have time to do that" - that the project is due too soon to redo the survey according to the advice given.

The first does sound unfortunately like "I don't want to deal with it," but I'm not sure that's the case.

And yeah, it does seem like surveys are coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden - even more so than usual.

You know, I've got a web host that I use for my stuff, but use only a fraction of the 5TB a month of bandwidth of the account. I'd be happy to host ad-free surveys for free. All that I'd ask is proof of some kind -- and simple proof will do, I don't need DNA evidence -- that the person doing the survey is actually doing so for a legitimate study or scholarly purpose.

Do you think I'd get any takers if I posted such an offer? If they ARE legitimate, they should be falling all over themselves.

Assuming that I do post it (as I said, I'm willing to do it) where would be the most appropriate place, do you think?

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

14. How often have people you helped in SL (concerning real or virtual thing) returned the favor?*
1) never
2) once
3) several times
4) often
5) always

I can not answer this question. I have helped strangers and I have asked strangers for help. They may be the same person. I don't keep track with who all I have done favors for. The list is too long to keep track of. I don't think I am much different than most of the people who post here. If I expect or even think of having a favor returned. It ceases to be a favor and becomes a trade. There is no way to express that point here.

No more of these surveys for me. In fact, if we ever get around to having a serious re-look at forums rules, I'd support making these threads disappear the instant a moderator sees one. The likelihood that any actual science is being done here is vastly outweighed by the probability that SL is just seen as a cheap, quick, and easy way for students to practice collecting and analyzing data. I'm all for students learning to do science, but let them study Hello Kitty or Facebook or QQ or, really, just anywhere else.

Thank you Nic Writer, the only one who said more than only offensive worlds.

sorry for my poor English! what a stupid situation... The project is due too soon to redo the survey according to the advice given, but definitely my survey is not next stupid, unprofessional and fast student survey about SL.

I'm disagreeably surprised. I understand that you are maybe upset because of next student who ask for filling in a survey on SL, but.. I put a lot of effort into this survey. I'm in Second Life about a year and a half and a topic I want to investigate – communication in SL – is a result my long participation in SL, not on the contrary. Thank you for all positive reactions. I really appreciate your help. This survey is created for all "real" residents of Second Life.

As I wrote I'm a sociology student at The University of Łódź, Poland. Here u have a link to the website of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz -> http://www.eksoc.uni.lodz.pl/eng/ im study on. here is a main page of University -> http://www.uni.lodz.pl . I do my investigation to earn my bachelors degree in Sociology under dr Elżbieta Michałowska (esting@uni.lodz.pl).

Oh! Well, that changes everything! In that case, sure, I'll take the survey. :)

Puella, I teach a class in communication in SL, and another on "relationships", which also touches on communication, so this is an area of interest for me as well.

I think that a person with your experience in SL has no need of a survey to explore this topic. Your own observations, and maybe a few talks with people on your Friends list, should provide all the material you need.

For some reason, everyone (including, unfortunately, professors) seems to think that it isn't science unless you have a survey. They are confusing "survey results" with "data". Data can come from anywhere, it does not have to be checked boxes on a piece of paper.

If it were me, and I was attending a College that let me do studies on computer games, I would probably instead of putting out these surveys on webstes and such, maybe go INWORLD and meet people and ask the questions. I bet a lot more people would be willing to answer, I would, and you may make some friends in the process. But that's just me. and I have been known to make silly suggestions.

I think what turned some people off was the way you worded your reply early on in the thread. It's not your fault, since it's one of the subtle things about the English language, and I know it's not your first language.

What you meant to tell people was that you don't have time to redo the survey because your assignment was due soon. What you actually said sounded like you couldn't be bothered to put out any effort and didn't care whether it was a problem for people - they should just deal with it and help you. I know you didn't mean that. It's just a minor difference in how you word things.

You should also know that we get a LOT of requests for help with surveys and a lot of them are scams by people looking for email addresses to send spam to, and still others are poorly written and even insulting, so people here are suspicious when they are asked to take part in a survey.

Anyway, my personal feeling is that this is not a good way to gether data. You don't get a representative sampling of the SL population, nor do you get a statistically significant sample size. The data is, therefore, completely suspect and it is likel to throw your results way off. Good luck on your project though, and have fun in SL!
