I was at the bug triage with several Lindens and they were mid-sentence, so whoever threw the switch didn't bother to tell anyone .

I've just tried going to secondlife.com on a separate tab... all I'm getting is a blank page! Anyone else getting that or is just me on my underpowered laptop?

The grid-wide slowdowns has an other update (not obvious :():
From: someone
[9:53 AM Pacific on 2007-07-31]

[Update] On Saturday, when one of our many database hosts failed to a backup system, the backup system in turn was unable to handle the load. We attempted several fixes to this problem, including the creation and migration of load to other DB hosts, but we were still unable to determine why the systems were having so much trouble keeping up.

On Monday AM, we figured out that the systems were misconfigured to handle the kind of load we were throwing at them. This was simple, unfortunate human error.

We’ve been bringing new, correctly configured search systems online as they’ve completed imaging and copying in their DBs.

That process should complete and be back to normal some time today. Again, we thank you for your patience.

I cant stand the bs i read on the blog,

" At the present time there are issues when attempting to log into Second Life. The Server Team is currently working on a resolution. More information will be available as we receive it. Thank you for your patience.

"

FIRST we get thrown out, THEN they post this, seems more like an act of panic or disaster to me, I hope theyre not losing it.

I don't think:

god even a 10 second warning would have been better than nothing .. "everyone's getting logged out on 10 seconds due to a major screw up" ..... or maybe a grid monkey just chewed through the power cable ... was a really bad idea making them banana yellow

I understand everything except the "throwing us off SL with no warning whatever". How difficult is it to give out a system-wide message?

My guess is that this an 'unscheduled outage' - otherwise how to explain the 503 Error that came not only in attempting to login to SL but also trying to access parts of these forums? That's not planned, it can't be.

Then suddenly, an OFFLINE message. Whatever's happening, it all seems to suggest panic measures to me.

Lets hope we are back online soon.

People ... whining about "sudden chuckout" ... maybe something serious was happening, and data was being corrupted. Would you rather be chucked out, and possibly lose something - or get a 5 minute warning and risk losing everything?

We don't know the facts... except we don't know them all. Sometimes we just have to trust LL that things are done for a reason, which we may never know.

I bet a lot of people complaining are those not contributing anything towards the costs too.

You know sometimes you just have to pull the plug and get the systems down, this is obviously an extreme condition.

Yes.... telling everyone to be so kind and log off in next 10 minutes may have resulted in more damage.

Yup.s This reminds me of when a similar plug pulling was done a few months back. Sometimes you simply do not have even the time for a single grid-wide notice.

I knwo I'd be VERY upset if all of my stuff was corrupted because of a delay in bringing down the grid. Way more than I would if I was one of those logged out to protect it all.

Heres something... Im a newbie here... and to come on as a new player and have all these problems right from the get go doesnt really wanna make me continue to pay them my money, or play this at all. in fact, It makes me want to demand a refund and uninstal the SL from my computer

I can't believe the amount of whining going on about not receiving a warning. Sure it sucks if you're working on something and suddenly get booted. It happens all the time though when you crash so get over it.

While I'm not a big fan of LL and their ability to maintain the grid I do know one thing: they aren't making money if no one is on. If they booted everyone off suddenly without warning I trust that it was for good reason.

Ah well, so it's "issues" is it ? I feel so much better informed thanks to the wonderful blog. After the fiasco that was yesterday, this is hardly LL's finest hour...

You won't get the refund, don't bother.

That said, if you quit because of the events of the last couple days, I suppose its understandable, but its not taking them in perspective, and it's not really a fair assessment of SL as a whole.

Marianne, I see I'm not the only one thinking of the "fatal hardware error" logout message of a few months back. They pulled the plug without warning then, and rightly so. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and think it must have been something equally, or nearly equally, serious and sudden this time.

Fareyn, these kinds of problems are annoying to say the least, and it's unfortunate for you they happened as you were trying to get up to speed with SL. It does have a lot of problems, but I at least think it is worth getting to know regardless. If you feel otherwise, I am sorry to hear it. But be warned... LL does not give refunds. So even if you uninstall SL and do not ever come back, no refund will be forthcoming.
