Many Linden employees are members of groups with names that start with "LLB".

What does that LLB stand for?

So far I've come up with Linden Lab Buffoons, Linden Lab Bimbos, Linden Lab Babies, and Linden Lab Bozos, none of which seem very likely to be correct.

There's some potential calendar material.

Er, LL.B. (or LLB) is a commonly used abbreviation for Legum Baccalaureus (Bachelor of Laws).

Yes, but unlikely in this context, I think. Besides, do they use that designation in the US?

Or maybe they run a fast-food place and are advertising their delicious Linden Lab Burgers (hope they're better than Krustyburgers).

I thought it looked like a stock symbol, but discounted it knowing that LL is a privately owned company. :)

It's for members of the LL team that work in the financial branch. Linden Labs Britain.

LL.B. was used in the USA (and there are still lawyers that have LL.B.'s instead of anything higher), and LL.M. and LL.D. - most USA Law Schools merged the degrees and came up with a single J.D., though will occasionally also offer a LL.M. for comparative legal study.

---
the above is probably the first time I ever used my J.D. for anything.

I'm almost reluctant to spoil all the great ideas you guys came up with but ......

It is 'Linden Lab Bonus'.

Linden Lab has a couple interesting bonus programs. The Love Machine has been discussed before and is a system where one employee can give another a quick kudos/thankyou, ie a 'love'. Each quarter LL pays employees a small amount per love they received.

The 'Distributor' is a pretty new system. More directly tied to profit sharing the distributor works like this:
* each employee gets a set number of points (say, 1000).
* each employee then gets to decide who to give those points to:
** Directly to other people (ie I could give 50 points to Jeska Linden)
** To groups of people (ie I could give 100 points to Liaisons)
** To jira tasks - gives points to the creator and resolver of the task (ie I could give 20 points to the people who found and fixed a specific bug)
* After all points are tallied and financial data is closed for the period each point is assigned a monetary value and employees receive a bonus based on that. (For example if points are worth 20c and I recieved 100 I would get $20)

There is one fancy schmancy web page that handles all of this - tracking the points, dividing up the points for groups and jira items etc. This page is the 'Distributor'.

As part of this the groups are not pre-ordained top down structured entities. Instead employees were encouraged to create and join groups in world. Groups that were started by a Linden and had LLB in the title or group description were automatically included by the Distributor as the available groups to choose from.

There is some debate internally about whether or not this was *too* loose a system for the groups - there ended up rather more groups than there probably should have been.

All in all it is a highly dynamic system that allows those in the trenches to decide who deserves the most extra bonus. We have used this system exactly once and thus it is still up for much refinement. :)
