So you're not really up to speed on what bots really do but it's clear that they're the problem?

No its just my current opinion.
I am interested in this thread to see what can be proven and made clear thou. :)

and as I said I have a vested interest on this and just want to voice what I think.

It looks like it, but I *don't* go to wedding, so they needn't invite me. I must remember to give my bots some lessons on where to buy furniture for marital homes :)

Hold on there bub. It was one of your missy bots and seeing that you’re the father of the bride we will be needing a little more then a mattress socked full of excite poses. That’s what probably got them in this mess in the first place.

/me kicks self for sending my best looking alt to a furniture store

Er.... unfortunately, due to no demand, I've had to close the store down, and quit SL completely - penniless. Tell them to elope ;)

...

On the other hand I'm reminded of something George Carlin said in one of his comedy "news" bits.

"A man shot six people on the downtown bus today, then asked for a transfer and shot six people on the crosstown bus. In order to prevent this happening in the future, authorities are discontinuing the transfer system"

I don't know what the solution is, other than to deprecate, or just remove traffic entirely. We could probably look 2 years back in these forums, and see almost an identical conversation about campers. They could ban bots tomorrow, and next week we'd be bitching about the new method people are employing to game traffic.

There is a big difference, though, between bots and campers at that level. While there is the issue of gaming the numbers, at the same time many, many newbies had some of their first conversations and introductions to Sl with conversations with campers. I can remember some rather nice camper areas (nice tables along a water front) where people with nothing else to do would have conversations with anyone that stopped by. And since they weren't going to get up until forced, the whole 'let's go to my house' thing was abated.

In short, campers for bots has replaced a relaxed area where people met people and were introduced into the non-official SL version of SL to a complete non-experience with non-responsive bots. I'll take campers over bots without a second thought. The business people in SL can worry about the metrics (another non-point to point match with the RL).

Hi

the best place for a lonely bots to visit must be "Echo Wita" sim
there are 80 bots in a sky box just to make trafic so the shops keywords can be on top of the seach.

If you want to see the bots then go to http://slurl.com/secondlife/ECHo%20Vita/41/42/772
Warning all the bots are going mads in there head. :-)

So to all of you here, is this a god or bad way to to get trafic ?
I think and hope Linden is going to ban places like this, like casino stuff, for the only purpose whit bots like this is to cheat poeple to think this is a good place to shop becorse "other" do so.

So i've just aged while i've read page after page after page of argument (some reasoned, some passionate, some irrational) about bots and camping and statistics and stuff and I feel this thread really isn't living up to my expectations.

I thought this thread was about naming bot locations and all I wanted to know was where I can find some hunky gangbang bots?...

/me smiles and looks innocent while dragging the thread into the gutter

What's your vested interest?

Really?
That I spend plenty of real US $ every month in SL paying tier and the non stop outfits that make as cute as apple pie. Besides the amount of items I buy constantly to change my land which is quite massive. Not to mention I am simply a member of this community even if I did not spend a dime. :)

I am honestly interested in what is to be said here. Do think I have no right or question that?
Come on Phil I don't know you from adam don't care to be vested in in a bitch fest with you either. SO let me pass you this. :)

Maybe if you were not so ,imo, condescending about this subject ppl can hear each other. But that goes for many.

edit: and another issue is impact of traffic bots on the local region. Though I have no idea how much one of these things impacts a sim, it sorta has to be a lot more than their relative impact to the grid itself.

My guess would be that whatever impact they have on performance is at the sim level. Are sim capacity caps by avatar count or by load? I think it's the former, so any bots would be limiting the capacity of the sim at the expense of all other land owners there.

No its just my current opinion.

I was more curious about your use of the "common sense" term.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread, there are a lot of resources available if you want to learn more about how SL works. LL doesn't tell us everything, in particular the details on how various SL servers talk to each other, but there is a lot of info on how clients (viewers, bots) talk to SL.

We do know that there's stuff (like the interest list) that the sim will push out to every client that connects to it. We also know that there's other stuff (textures, inventory) that SL will not send on it's own - the client has to ask for it.

Think about a bunch of bots up in some skybox. Bots don't care about textures so they're not asking the sim for that info. Bots also don't really care about inventory so they're not asking the asset servers for that info. They're not rezzing anything, they're not looking at profiles, they're not inspecting somebody's shoes to see where they can buy a pair, they're not chatting or IM'ing, they're not involved group chats, they're not searching, they're not buying anything, they're not TPing to other sims, they're not running any scripts, they're not doing ANYTHING but standing there. All they are doing is being logged in.

Without us knowing what the cost-to-the-grid of 'just being logged in' is, nobody can really say how much bots are hurting it. But if you think about all the stuff that 'real' people do on the grid and compare it to what bots do, I sorta think it's common sense to say that they have FAR less impact.

Er.. Yes, they're capped by count and load. :)

Mainland sims are always capped at 40 and, IIRC, private island owners can set it up to 100 if they want. That said, you can still load a sim down enough so that more people can't get in even if you aren't at that max setting yet.

See now that was a very informative responce and I will learn more as I look these things up. An informed consumer is the best thing you can do for yourself.
I can see how they would use up less of an impact with that said. However like you said what is the impact of just signing on and we just dont know that yet. Is where I was coming from in my thinking in all of this. I can see both sides.

oh and thank you

Then I guess you don't get around SL much and/or just ignore threads like this:
/327/3d/271262/1.html

There are a few DJ's going around that have their own little "Fan Club" they say they will bring to events to get the job when they are just zombie bots they are running. Not to mention several clubs that use zombie bots to make it look like people are there.. Then the places that advertise camping but have their own bots in the camp devices.

Saying bots are a good thing to load the grid is asinine. That is what the BETA grid is for. People pay good money for SL to run smooth, especially premium members, and if any of their problems in SL is because a large percentage of the concurrency is bots then that most certainly is a negative experience. SL would get a lot more REAL people to stress the grid if the grid was usable after 60K are online. Bots are hogging up spots were real people would be if SL ran smoother.

But to each their own I guess....

BOTS slow me down. I avoid places that use them.
