Yes, but people have certain expectations of them if they are wearing the Linden name.

..snip..
But in general, LL has been so lax on any 'policing' of past accounts that I would not expect action against anyone unless there was some new complaint.

Given the sheer quantity of users I suspect have created free alts, not to mention the referenced extenuating circumstances which presumably apply to a lot of users, that's gotta be an unpopular move. A lot of work by the sound of it too.

How's this for a reason? If they catch you, and can prove that you LIED on your registration form to steal extra free accounts, they can cancel your accounts and confiscate their assets.

They can do that anyways...

Aah! I can think of nothing worse than TOS 2.6. Other than cute pics being yanked from profiles, perhaps. :D

Sorry for asking a basic question, but how can you appear at the same time as an alt? Can you run two instances of SL simultaneously on the same computer?

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple

Here is a tip, if you going to get an alt, sign them up with a premium account right from the get-go, it will cost $9.95USD (yes the same amount) but they get the $L sign-up bonus, plus you can buy first land, and get that first monthly stripend.

Then after your setup, buy your first land, sell it for say $3000L (a $2500L profit), downgrade your account to basic. After it is all over with, you have a basic alt that has provided you with the following things.

This is what you get by doing it like this:
- $1000L sign-up bonus
- $2500L profit from selling purchased first land.
- $1600L/$1200L from your monthly stripend (depends when you start)

That totals to either $5100L -or- $4700L and with the current exchange rate of about $280L/$1USD your now basic account has a total worth of $17.51USD or $16.14USD which is a profit over the initial $9.95 you have spent in the beginning.

So, if you really think about it. Its really isn’t so bad to create an alt.

AS

ps… at not time have it or do I used this method for profiteering. I have much better things to do than to spend a couple hours trying to make a few bucks. I’m just trying to show people, getting an alt isn’t so painful after all.

The one problem with above Athena is you have to pay $9.95 to downgrade from premium.

I think you have misunderstood the downgrading cost. It states the following:

* Downgrading from Premium Trial to Basic or reactivation of a closed account will incur a one-time $9.95 fee.

This fee is the inital fee, not another fee. It is so people can't sign-up, go preium, and then get a refund during a 7 day trial peroid.

My figures never stated trying to get a refund.

---edit---

I just verified via Live Help with Amber Linden: there is no downgrading cost.

Hang on a minute, an alt account also would have to pay premium tier

So say $22.50 per quarter min in advance has to be aded in there somewhere unless i am either missing the point or am mis-informed about account costs?

Why Have Another Alt???
10-31-2006 02:53
Because you messed up your SL life with the people who are significant to you and need to hide from them :) I havent done this....but I know from personal experience it's been done..but..you have to be good to do that cuz you'll easily trip up yourself and be discovered. It's one thing to use your alt for fun and silliness..it's another to use it to deceive others...sad that people feel that need.

There's nothing to link the alt to the original. It's purely honor system, so it will just ask you whether this is your first account, and if not, it will require credit card info to charge you the fee.

Even after you're finished, there's no way in SL to know that two avs are alts for the same person, unless that person tells you. No link, no shared 1st Life tab, nothing.

Thats what coco explained in another thread about making alts. she made two alts with two different e-mail. So paid alts seems not to exist anymore.

For my money, accounts are 'auto' monitored by email address, setting up another email address allows you to create an alt that is not linked to any other account.

Um - First Land has been abolished. You'd be very lucky to find a 512 parcel for under 7000L

Actually land prices are going down at the moment, due to new land being released by LL. 512 parcels now start at 5017$L. Of course that is still a far cry from First Land...

If only I had upgraded a few weeks sooner...

ROTFLOL! I didn't see that - in fact I wondered why no one else had pointed out the demise of First Land.

Just think - a post from the Golden Age, when landbots were a blip on the horizon and the phone weasel was still to be discovered by intrepid explorers. Hahahahah!

Edit: With one cunning master stroke I turn this old thread into a landbot/phone weasel thread.

Old posts are so much fun. They're like little slices of history. The topic is still kinda interesting though. The registration process has actually gone through quite a few phases in my time. When I signed up with my first account (about 2-2 1/2 years ago) it was $9.95 for your first account, all accounts after that free and you HAD to verify with a credit card. About seven months later I created a new account (the one I'm currently using, that first one is dead) and at that time it was a registration system like now with the first account free and the ones after that $9.95, from some fluke they didn't charge me. I like to think it's cause I had paid for the first.

Then there was open registration, during that I think you could verify your identity by having it txt a code to your cell phone. All accounts were free, how marvelous. I think I created an account during that, but I only had her on for one day and then didn't use her. Now I can't access her because of that whole password fiasco that happened sometime last summer.

Now you don't have to verify, you just have to havev a different email address. Which mind you are easy enough to create on Yahoo.
