Having got a spiffy new computer, I was looking forward to enjoying the delights of Windlight.
What happened to the 'first view' version? I can't find it anywhere.
Any updates on when it might be in?

If I had to choose between voice and Windlight, I'd take Windlight. It wasn't perfect, but at ground level, it was great. Unfortunately, last time I looked, there was no word of when Windlight was coming back.

It is supposed to be released right after Havok 2. Hmmm, or was that after HTML on a prim. Oh no, wait, right after age verification, yeah thats it. So pretty soon.

The last announcement from the Lindens about Windlight was in a June 14th blog post:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/06/14/windlight-update/ Basically they've taken it back internal to work out the bugs. They are "excited" to get it integrated into the regular client, but no timeline has been given. _____________________

It has been pulled to work out the buggies, while voice is put on the front burner. There is at least some motion on it, and their is a newer internal build being worked over. They received an enormous amount of feedback on its initial release, and are actively working on it internally, as Mari noted. I suspect that as far as new feature development is concerned, they've simply realized that voice will be much easier, and less complex, to push into the mainstream than Windlight will, so it's taken a back seat on the release management bus. It's just a matter of winning the easier battles first.

Does anybody know when it's coming back? I miss my non-ugly sunsets.
Since when is "bugs" a reason for them not to release something? |

I hope they take their time with this one, as the preview version I played with broke local lighting horribly, washing out thoughtful use of lighting to the point where you could barely tell it was in place at all.

Does anybody know when it's coming back? I miss my non-ugly sunsets. Since when is "bugs" a reason for them not to release something? Well, C'mon.. 1/2 the people I talked to said it didnt even run on their machine, and the 1/2 that did had various issues with it. While it ran for me, when near the edge of a sim, or really high up, the other sims were not even rendering for me. You had to be within about 10 meters or less of the boundry when standing on the ground for the adjacent sim to appear. Heh, in a way.. Since My lot in the corner of the sim, it appeared as though I had "oceanfront" property. Seriously though, it was too buggy for LL to let it ride.. and hammer out the bugs, so it went back internal. Honestly, I was sorta suprised, they were releasing sculpted textures, voice, and windlight all at once. It's no wonder they had to back off a bit and take things a bit slower. I mean, they aquired an entire other company, bringing on the developers of the windlight technology to get windlight. You've gotta give the team some time to get things together. Personally, I liked at least getting a "sneak preview" of what's to come. Remember, good things come to those who wait. ![]() |

Does said new spanky computer work really well with SL? If so.. whatcha get? Yes ![]() ADVENT T9408 DESKTOP PC Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E4300 1.8GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache Genuine Windows Vista(TM) Home Premium 1024MB RAM Memory 320GB Hard Drive Dual Layer DVD Re-Writer Drive 8-In-1 Media Card Reader 6 USB connections I upgraded the supplied graphics card to an Nvidia Geforce 7600GT 256mb graphics card. All works with Vista, no problems at all. I wasn't really wanting to buy a complete new system but when I saw how much it would have cost me to just upgrade the few bits I wanted, and the bits I'd have to replace as my current stuff would not be compatible, I essentially got a case, 320mb hard drive, DVD rewriter, media card reader, keyboard, mouse and Vista for about $40. I'd rather have voice. My shoddy computer can't handle windlight, and I'm still working on upgraded
![]() Also, I use voice a lot more than I would want to use windlight, so ehh... _____________________

Broccoli The last time I saw Windlight mentioned was in Torley Linden's blog post made on the 19th of July; http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/07/19/living-in-paintings "...like WindLight (coming soon to a public release near you!)" (about halfway the post). And as far as if I'd have to pick between Windlight and Voice? Heck, I'd go for Windlight any day. My computer can handle it fine and dandy with still no lag and it's awesome when it comes to taking snaps. And as far as voice goes.. Isn't there Skype and all for that. >.> |

ah that means they are out drinking and will wait for some one in open source to do it It's amazing how everyone will bitch and moan that a new feature was rushed through to the public with a bunch of bugs but when they roll it back and try to work shit out everyone says they're messing around and being lazy. WindLight isn't even put together by LL but by another company that specializes in that technology which they bought. We ought not visit the sins of the Fathers on the children they bought! It so happens that voice chat is a lot easier to implement than windlight since it's only barely integrated into the viewer compared to windlight. Plus the companies working on voice chat have had a lot more experience with what they're doing. I'm confident they'll put both on the main viewer in a reasonable amount of time and it will work better than the firstlook attempts. They have to! They need to get their graphics up to at least 2001 standards to attract people! _____________________
