no giving up: it's time to fight back.
mmmm... well, not sure how to fight back however...

No point in fighting back - You'll just be labeled a paranoid alarmist.

Voice has no negatives for the SL community - only positives.

The negatives - well those are figments of our imaginatons.

How To Ban Voice Chat
08-03-2007 07:29
From: Monalisa Robbiani
How can I do that? I looked for the option in "about land" but I can't find it.

1: Estate Level: In the Estate tools there is a checkbox for "Allow Voice Chat". The sim owner or Estate Manager(s) can un-check that, and Voice will not function in the entire Estate. (This will be necessary for any sim owner that does not want to get charged an annual fee for allowing Voice to work in their sim, unless the sim owner is already paying the increased tier rate to LL, which includes Voice.)

2: Parcel Level. Look for an option in About Land that says "Disable Spatialized Audio" and select that.

3: Personal level: Preferences > Voice Chat, and un-check the checkbox that says to enable Voice. This is, fortunately, the default - for it to be unchecked. While your own Voice setting is disabled you can't hear or use the Voice features, and you are not labeled as Voice Enabled to those who themselves are voice enabled. You see no visual indications of who is or isn't using Voice. Voice Enabled users see no indications on you.

There is a JIRA request by Argent Stonecutter to make it possible to toggle the visibility of the dots over people's heads for voice enabled status, independant of your own Voice settings. This would allow a non-voice user to flip it on to see who is Voice Enabled and using Voice near them, WITHOUT having to enable Voice for themselves and give a false impression to Foice users that the non-voicer is voice capable and willing to talk, and WITHOUT being forced to hear those who are speaking in Voice Chat near them. I support this JIRA request, as it would give non-voicers a way to be aware of who is using Voice, without ruining our experience by forcing us to hear RL voices. And it would be something we could leave OFF most of the time.

Personally, I notified my friends and my land group that Voice is banned on my land, and that repeated requests to hear my Voice, in spite of my polite refusals to do so, will result in immediate forfeiture of all contact with me. If they won't respect my choice to never use Voice or hear the RL voices of others, then I won't associate with them.

I don't personally care if others choose to use Voice. I just don't want it shoved down my throat. And I really dislike what they did to the Text and IM user interface. Because of their blasted "Chatterbox", I now have to run SL in a window that is 50% larger than I used to, just to accommodate that bloated interface, even though I will NEVER use Voice! So my SL experience is now slower and less responsive, as my limited system tries to deal with the larger window. Thank the Gods I will soon be buying a better system for accessing SL, because I can see I will need it, very soon, to continue enjoying SL at all.

So this means we cannot turn off voice on our land without using the voice-enabled client!!!!!!!

The headphone sign is still there though so I wasn't sure if that was the right option!

I support that Jira request too.

You have to use it once for the setting then you can switch back.
