How can I tell if a name is a bot

An AV came on to my sim the name was nothing but numbers and a short last name, in the mean time did a search for the name and there is now 100 of them all numbers. Could this be a bot and should I worry...

Banning all 100 of them is a little stupid, but what is the reason for this...

Bots are alt accounts and are named whatever the bot runner wants to name them. They walk among us, incognito. Only their vacant eyes and silence give them away.

I bought a Bender avatar for my bot. But no one is at the controls to give the attachment permission to crush the avatar's shape, so he looks like a deformed Bender. He doesn't have vacant eyes, but they do blink asynchronously, true to the Bender character.

Do you have a specific worry about a specific kind of bot, or is this a more all-encompassing phobia?

Names like you mention are probably more likely to be bots than something that someone spends a lot of time on, but I wouldn't place a lot of confidence in names being a good identifying characteristic.

Last night I saw two avatars in a Linden Sandbox, named something like "Cherry SomethingOrOther" and "Cherry2 SomethingOrOther", and neither one appeared to be a bot. I would be more likely to assume that names in series like that, with the same last name and only differentiated by a single-digit number would be assigned to bots, but you can just not tell by that alone.

One set of bots was named with the first name Mannequin as a first name, there was a whole bunch of them. I think there's a set of bots named Roflcopter. I don't know if these are still around or not.

Some bots are in groups so the bot runner can use the group permission and IM system, I supposed, or maybe just to make it easy to keep track of them all.

Since bots can relay chat to their operator and send chat written by the operator there isn't much good way to tell a bot with the operator actively involved from a normally operated account.

I'd try administering the Voight Kampf test, but, veeery carefully.

Bots may become dangerous when cornered.

* * * * *

An even tougher question is: are *you* a replicant? How do you know?

Sure, you've got memories. We all do. But are they real?

Ask yourself this.

Do you experience server lag, but from the client side?

Do you wonder what all that strange, useless, unparsed stuff on channel 0 is?

Do you have any problem with being logged in for four hours? Four hundred?

Do you have secret animosity toward less sophisticated, human-loyal bots?

Do you wonder why you have 20 sims of land at any given time, but no house?

Does the expression "!quit" make you laugh and spur you to create mayhem?

Eyes I just do eyes! Aaaiieeeeaaah!!!

I had someone sit cross legged on my head once! No matter where I flew he sat there in a particular sim... he may have been a bot and I have been led to believe since it was.. but as for the name, cant tell you as it was before I knew cam controls to pan round and peek at his name! ;)

Bots are around to camp mainly, and one way to find out is to shut off the dancepad/chair. Bots are programmed to standup imediately and teleport to the next chair/pad in the list.. if you suspect a bot, try shutting of the chair or pad, and if the avatar imediately stands up and leaves, it's most likely a bot. Especially if a "real"camper cant tell that the chair has been turned off.

Ah...second post I saw on this, although I have not seen any of these numerically named characters around.

Any "good" answers yet?

Had some kind of strange visitors picked up visiting my land in the last few days all having similar names such as 00000005bnt, 00000014bnt and so on.

I do a people search and there are 90 odd AV's created on 20 July from 00000002bnt onwards.

Just curious as to who these guys are - any one seen them about also?

Thanks

Billy

and here's the answer:

BnT is an LL registered last name by Brautigan and Tuck Holdings ( one of the companies listed on AVIX and previously WSE). Purpose is to show that avies are associated with the company and IP rights don't get muddled.

I remember seeing an announcement over at wselive.com about this.

Watch out for 00000007bnt. I hear that one has a license to kill.
