I am all for the full sim infohubs. These are great solutions to the crowding. I also go to Moose Beach and TRY to hep (most do not want help they just want to hang out and chat with all the strangers there).
BUT the antiquated infohubs that are placed in sims where premium account holders have parcels compete for the resources and avatar slots on that sim. The zoo has out grown these small parcels. I believe Linden lab needs to use them for newbie schools or retire them altogether. I do think that new players should not be thrown into these mainland sims, 30 an hour when the sims cannot handle the load.

Why infohubs?

I think that's where all the Extroverts go. They are out of their element here on the Internets (AKA the Domain of the Introverts), which might explain some of the strange behavior.

I talked to this newbie once at the infohub and he freaked out that I was talking to him in complete sentences. I think the draw of the infohub is that it is a place for no one and a place for everyone. No one group can really claim it for themselves as it's not a vampire castle, dance club, combat area, or whatever. It also has a constant influx of new people who are themselves interesting or can serve as an impromptu audience for all sorts of weird performers.

(I so know where this thread is heading)

I hope it's not a "why do we need infohubs" discussion necessarily. I was more interested in the human nature aspect of it. Also, you know of course, it wasn't a slam on Bay City. That just happened to be the one I went to, nor was it really disparaging infohubs or even some wacko behavior. Some of it can be quite interesting.

I like Mickey's idea of being an impromptu helper. If I were a little more outgoing, I might enjoy that myself. Certainly a puppy dog might give some new person a different perspective. :o

Interesting answers all around.

Infohubs have icons on the map.

"Unsupervised hangout spots run by users" don't have an icon on the map.

In RL there's a device called "the Mosquito" that emits a high frequency noise that's annoying to teens but few people over 25 can hear. It's used to discourage loitering outside convenience stores. We need the SL equivalent, but one specific to people who practice annoying behaviors.

deal, i'll make one.

I did the impromptu help thing for about half a year. Eventually I found NCI and SL Mentors so that I could get my hands on greater resources to be more helpful. Still... Sometimes there a good laugh to be had in just being random and uninhibited. I still got plenty of Hanja-tude in my little butt. =^-^=
