You're doing the same thing we all did when we started out.

Sometimes clothing is packaged in a box, shopping bag, or similar. You need to go to some land where you're allowed to rez things, rez the box on the ground, right click it and select open, then when the list of contents appears, select Copy to Inventory. You'll wind up with a new folder in inventory containing the individual items, and you'll be able to wear those.

Don't forget to pick up the box after you've gotten the inventory. No one likes a litterbug :)

"Rez the box on the ground" = find the box in your inventory, click and drag it from inventory to the ground in front of you, in an area where you are allowed to rez or build, such as a public sandbox.

Just wear the box and make a fashion statement!

Uhm, while it may look silly, you CAN wear the box and then click on it to open and copy the items of clothing to your inventory. then detach the box...wear the clothes...and you're all set.

This helps when you're not in a place where you can rez objects.

I think you have just changed my life!

This explains something. I got some welcome packs, and when I rezzed them on the ground, they turned out to be handbags. At the same time I got a request to animate my avatar. It turned out to be a bag-holding pose.

I couldn't figure out why I would want to hold a thing I wanted to open.

I like it when people name the boxed items with (open me) or (boxed)

sadly I forget to do that to my own products :(

I miss the days when wearing a box would attach it to your head.

Note that this trick only works with attachments when the contents are copiable. If they're no-copy SL won't let you move them out of an attachment because there used to be a trick you could use to duplicate no-copy objects that way. :D

We have all worn boxes on our head. Or arm. Or wherever. It is a SL rite of passage.

You haven't lived until you've worn a house or a canoe or a motorbike on your head. That's when it really gets exciting.

At one time I tried to make my own male "parts"......accidental incorrect attachment took on a whole new meaning.

When I'm struggling trying to build or script something, I often comfort myself with the thought that nothing in SL can be as difficult as once I thought opening boxes must be, and since I eventually got that cracked, with a bit of help, I can probably manage most things.

That's what they need to put into the new user orientation, not the 'walk into this circle and talk to this parrot' stuff.

Thanks for that bit of info Argent...I'll do a test when I'm inworld as I never paid attention to whether the items were no copy. But, most of the clothes that I've bought are copy so it may not have been an issue.

I'll report back if anything different comes of it..but one can also edit the box while wearing it and drag items to inventory when in edit mode...not sure if that is a workaround for no copy instead of using "open" and "copy to inventory". they may not show up in a pretty named folder...but I hope everyone knows how to do that anyway. Also cuts down on all the LMs and Notecards that get showed into inventory.

Don't think so. The attack, if I understand it right, is that the attachment state isn't saved until you take it off, so if you can move something out of it then crash the sim, when you log in again it's back in the attachment. That's why you have to rez AOs in-world to put no-copy anims in them.

I had misread your first post about this...you're talking about 'attachments' and removing other objects/items out of the attachment? That was not what I was addressing in my reply about opening a box, essentially, clothing (which is what I believe the OP was asking about.)

I haven't tried this with attachments...only boxes that i wanted to open before I got home...I get a little excited with some of my purchases and can't wait to open them! ;-)

Someone will correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think Argent's talking about trying to take no copy items out of something while it's attached to you -- be it a box attached to your hand containing no copy clothes you've just bought and can't wait to get home, or a hud attached to your screen containing no copy scripts and animations.

The reason you can't is that, if you could, you might under certain circumstances end up with copies of the no copy items in both your hud (or box) and in your inventory.

I think you're talking about the same thing - i.e. if you right-click a box (or a house, car, whatever ... ) in inventory and choose "wear", it effectively becomes an attachment.

Yeh, I was talking about the trick of wearing a box you bought so you can take the stuff out of it in a no-rez zone. When you wear something, that makes it an attachment... that's all that an attachment is, a prim you're wearing. There's no difference between an attached box and an attached HUD.

Anyway, that trick only works if the stuff is copy.

I recall once, while poking through a box of freebies, ending up with a case of beer precisely where my head should be.
I said "how do I look?" to my equally noobish friend. Funny thing, my avatar turned her head toward him at just that moment, making the whole thing look too real.
We both just about fell off our chairs laughing. To this day, one of my fondest newbie memories :)
