Self-imposed rules in SL - do you have any?

We have lots of chat about rules and restrictions in SL but I expect some of us have our own self-imposed rules about our SL usage, even if it is just so we can break them with impunity! Here are some of mine.

To encourage my RL agent not to spend too long on SL, I don't go on-line on Wednesdays. Since I, Conifer Dada, am an SL resident avatar, presumably I must be somewhere in world, invisible and unrecorded, but where I haven't a clue.

I only buy stuff or land in SL with Lindens acquired in-game. I don't ask my RL to feed me money off that card thing. I broke that rule once to buy a nice piece of land where I still live after over 6 months.

I don't ask people questions about their RL apart from which country and that's all I say about my own RL although I do sometimes chat about general RL things like weather, places or cats or whatever.

I clear away stuff I've rezzed in sandboxes unless it's something I'm particularly proud of or it's on the Beta Grid when it's very quiet there.

I don't fly about except when I have my jetpack, flying suit and crash helmet on, even though the jetpack is switched off at low altitude and I'm just doing normal flying. An exception is if I get caught somewhere or I have to hop over a wall.

I put my aqualung on if I'm going to spend any time under water.

In my own locality - the sim I live in and the adjacent areas of neighbouring ones, I get about by walking or running and try to avoid teleporting, except to my sky platform which is 500 ft so I have to unless I use the jetpack!

No unnecessary real-world inherited constraints such as jetpack, crash helmet, aqualung...

ATTACHED SCRIPTS AND PRIMS TO A MINIMUM (generally 2/3 scripts, less than 10 prims).

Never using multi-tools/gadgets/gizmos because they are lag-monsters. Never using platform rezers because it's so easy to rez then Z=500. Even avoiding my nice multi-chair since i've discovered it makes 0.032mS script time.

Parking my avatar when i'm not available for interaction (underwater is my favorite), never getting Away in public or crowded places, or a land which is not mine.

Never chatting with my friends in busy places, using IM instead.

Never using sounds except on my own land.

No Rules other than to have fun, and to give it up if it stops being fun. Oh yeah, and The White Zone is for loading and unloading only. Almost forgot. Respect other residents privacy and use the same courtesies I'd use in RL whenever possible.

One rule personally.

SL is for exploration and fun. Me and the real life fiance have never, now will ever have a pair of avatars as partners/boyrfriend girlfriend, or anothing other than a platonic relationship. The closest we have been were self described brother and sister, or sister and sister (depending on avs). We've even introduced eachother to SL 'significant' others, and they have all been aware of the nature of our RL relationship and stance.

We've only broken it once, when she was at her rl sisters for more than two weeks tending to her health, and it was more of a single scene, or virtual phone sex, than any lasting or elongated relationship. Would we break again? If she was away for 2 weeks or so again, possibly, but under normal conditions, we have eachother RL, we leave SL out of it.

What Brenda said .... plus ..
No parking in the Pink Zone .... unless flagged adult.
My RL fiancee and I only meet every two weeks .. so .. Bilbo99 and Morgaine always introduce ourselves as such in-world and out. We first met online .. long story.

Be honest .. if you can't be honest .. be gone.

I use only L$ garnered in-world, always clean up before leaving a sandbox, and try to be considerate.

Oh, and always treat people who act like assholes as if they were acting like assholes. It feels better that way, and sometimes they learn something.

I don't feed money -in-, I only take it out. I broke that one once when I ran out of $L to do the massive amount of texture uploads I needed for my first serious building project, but I've more than made that back.

I don't break RL appointments in favor of SL activities; I'm in SL when there's nothing going on in RL. The allowed exception is building for sale items when I'm on a time crunch, as that's business.

I don't tell people where I work, my real name, give my phone number or address, or otherwise let people know who I am in RL. I've had enough stalkers in my online career, and this has been an online rule I keep everywhere to maintain my sanity.

The rest are just guidelines, really.

Self-imposed rules

If I win money at a club, I recycle it into the Sploder or in tips.

I give out money to campers after talking to them to find out what they are camping to save up for (gave 500L to a girl who wanted a new dress - she then came back to where I was to show me the dress - and the wings she was able to buy with the leftover money)

I usually wait for my friends to IM me as I don't want to interrupt them.

Am as honest and kind as in real life - this is not a game and there are people behind those avatars.

Discourage sexual harrassment with humor and if that doesn't work I always have a quick TP ready.

Never judge anyone by their outward appearance - in RL or SL - you just never know that weird looking avi may turn out to be the best friend you ever had!

The only hard and fast rule I keep in SL is... I do not let my inventory exceed 2000 items, and I keep it organized. That's as much stuff as I can keep track of.

Aside from that...In an effort to contribute to lag as little as possible, I don't wear prim-based clothes unless there's a special occasion, I try to ensure all my scripts are well written and run efficiently.

Everything else for me is pretty much the same in RL as SL: try and be nice, polite, and courteous to people, avoid jerks and drama, and keep to myself.

At contests, or events, never vote in a way that gives me a better chance of winning, vote honest. Also, never use pathetic open chat tactics to try to get votes and/or attention.

Never date or show interest in someone who is a member in a bunch of free sex groups.

Cherish the right to be a b**ch if I'm harassed or antagonized.

Never try a new viewer (if possible) until i read all about the problems others are having with it first.

Always ask my neighbors for their opinions on things of mine that affect the look of where i live.

Don't make assumptions about people or places until im qualified to do so, which may be never.

Show respect for others in public places as long as they are doing the same.

I never rezz my "giant spinning pancake" in busy clubs.

I only wear my old lady skin, self-made "freak" avatar and retro outfit/gogo boots when I'm with friends (who know I'm out of my mind).

I never rebuild a parcel of land unless the structure has been up at least 20 minutes. That gives neighbors a chance to see it from the corner of their eye before my buildaholic tendencies kick in again.

I never EVER stay up past 8:30am after a night on my land (for instance) wearing a full cowboy costume, riding my horse and having shooting matches with my friends with various weapons (last time was a penis shooter: they're not just for n00bs anymore™), while screaming YEEHAWW!

And I never ever ever ever e.. no wait, I alw... hmm no... wait... ummm

I'm just the opposite!

I seem to be one of the rare few who is not here to make money. Trying to run a successful business in SL would just be all stress and no fun for me.

SL is my recreation, and I'm willing to pay for it. And to be honest, it makes me feel really good to help support those of you creating really beautiful content. :)

i have a few rules ive always kept since starting

1. ive never bought linden i have always worked or earned the $L ive needed even if it meant going to tons of contests while between jobs

2. i never let my inventory go over 2k items i normally keep it below 1500 unless im in the middle of a build

3. i have yardsales every 2 to 3 months if i havent worn or used an items since the last yardsale it gets sold off

4. i collect tons of freebie items and organize them and put them in a huge freebie box i hand out and put all over my shops and friends shops for $0L

5. i do my best to help out new people or anyone with questions i may be able to help with

i think those are my main ones

1: My SL fun has to pay for its own expenses. I don't usually buy L$. If I can't earn enough in-world to cover those expenses, it can wait until I can accumulate enough. The only exception I have allowed in the last year was one purchase of L$ to cover a land purchase, and I paid that back to my Player in less than a month.

2: I do not give out my RL contact info unless it is required for real-world business. No RL names, phone numbers, addresses - period.

3: I do not, EVER, date anyone in RL who I have met on-line. All I ever offer to the other Players is friendship, never more.
