There's a new virtual world being promoted, Here's the url for the Virtual Worlds News story on it. http://www.virtualworldsnews.com/2010/01/cisco-launches-united-nations-citizens.htmlFrom what I've read, it's being reported as being done by or partly by Cisco, but it isn't really being done by Cisco. It's offering paying jobs. It's apparently supposed to be some kind of scheme for using 3D virtual worlds for marketing real world goods.

I had high hopes when I saw the first blurb but after checking out some links it seems less promising.
There's another new thing, not related, using or expected to use Entropia technology, called Next Island. It claims it has millions of users and billion dollar economy. The download is 3 gigs, which fits with Entropia technology. The lastest version of Entropia doesn't work properly on my old system, so I won't be checking out Next Island. If memory serves, Entropia requires credit card info, so if this Next Island does also, that will be be a considerable restraining factor in getting people to try it out, even though it's free to sign up with.

Last time I d/led Entropia it was 5 gigs The buildings in this business park look pretty basic - the video is not very well done. None of that makes it look like a polished product.

I printed out the job list. What is available now are standard virtual world jobs - bartender, club manager, commission sales and greeters. I believe pay is through paypal. Looks like the money will not be any better than your first fast food job when you were 17 years old (well, maybe the club manager job or personal shopper job will be a tad bit more income).
Working for RL stores through a virtual temp agency. It's a nice experiment.

I like the sound of "... with passion point programming" (from the link in the OP) ETA: But I have no idea what it means! Hmmm, now I've actually looked over the site I see a) there's nowhere to download the software or sign-up, so it looks like it hasn't actually started yet. b) if you want a job you have to agree to terms & conditions which don't appear to be published anywhere. c) I can't get a job there anyway because it won't accept UK mobile phone numbers (not enough digits allowed) and I don't have an, obligatory, facebook account.

It's a Blue Mars wannabe, using the same CryEngine 2.

I filled out the application just to see what happens with it. Since it's listed as a *job* application, and they are located in California, they are obligated to pay at least minimum wage, which is a lot more than most people in SL earn. It uses the Cryengine2 graphics engine by the way, its mentioned on their website and I recognize the palm trees from the Crysis games and Blue Mars . It's not a user-created kind of world though, more like a virtual shopping mall for real world businesses. They will build your store for you and find staff. The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas is listed on their site, and a virtual tour of a real world hotel is actually a sensible use of the technology. Pay your greeters a commission on real room rentals, get enough traffic to the site, and it might work out. What would make this work is the real world businesses can drive their own traffic to the place, but they can share the overhead of running the 3D site.

If they can get the international tourist industry to back them then they could make some impact.

Interesting! Looking at the video, seems these guys are way ahead of Blue Mars. Anyone find out how to get a general user account? Be nice to roam around in this one, or is this still being worked on?

I hope they are giving the UN a cut for using the name. I wonder if M has seen this. They've beaten SL to the punch and become a Virtual World full of RL Corporate noise. Game Over. I lost track of how many Corps were pimped on that site. You haven't even entered the place and the brands are being shoved in your face. No thank you.

Looks like the only corp that has any actual VR content is Petsmart.
This so looks like what LL was trying to do with corps in SL circa early 2007.

You know, Petsmart would probably go over about as well in SL as any corp right now, the way the whole virtual pet thing has taken off lately.

From: Michaele Vollmar Interesting! Looking at the video, seems these guys are way ahead of Blue Mars. Anyone find out how to get a general user account? Be nice to roam around in this one, or is this still being worked on? Here is the information on membership: From: UN Each applicant desiring a position will have a fair opportunity to secue a position and become a "Charter Citizen." The following is how we are moving forward:
1. Job Opportunities & Sign Up (online assistants, greeters, tour operators, etc.) - During this phase interviewees will have the opportunity to: - Review world attributes, have an online review with a dedicated operator and future discussion with a HR person (if agreed including; terms of work, restrictions, etc.) 2. Online training (online assistants, greeters, tour operators, etc.) - During this phase job applicants will complete a staged tutorial and appropriate testing for their proposed position - Final agreement for positions to be determined by HR after this phase 3. World Showcase "WebEx Showcase Launch" - During this phase we will provide journalists & members the opportunity to "test drive" in the world - At this time, a limited number of positions will be tested 4. Retail Opens, PPV Concerts and Limited Access by Members - During this phase we will provide an open forum of the software to be downloaded and enjoyed by limited numbers of consumers - Online Assistants and Greeters (and other appropriate positions) to be available for completing their tasks in world 5. Major event (to be named) for World Launch - The date alone will give it away (so can't give out that good piece of information)
We will be providing a comprehensive email on next steps, retail locations and more on Jan. 22, 2010.
Please stay tuned, and thank you for your initial interest.

From: Lias Leandros Here is the information on membership: Yeah, I got the same info. They are collecting names for people to work there, but its not till step 4 till people can visit. Like I said, they are touting this as an actual job, so they are required to pay actual salaries (at least minimum wage rates). That's a lot more than almost anyone in SL makes.

Wonder what the requirements are going to be to run this? Crysis, Entropia, and I believe Aion are also cryengine. Had no problems running those. Blue Mars there was no joy, just pain until I admitted defeat and uninstalled. Hope this won't be the case!

UNC has replied with more info on their jobs:
01-23-2010 09:54
I am following through on the job application process to see where it goes. At worst I will get a virtual job that pays minimum wage, which is more than I make in SL List of companies: http://www.unitednationscitizen.com/virtualjobs/ From their email: The week of 2/8 our team will be setting up "tours of the world" as well as interviews with select applicants. In advance, we will be sending you a form to fill out to secure the following: 1.) The type of store you are interested in working; 2.) The type of position you are interested; 3.) If you are not interested in a retail position; offering tour guide and greeter positions at key locations (movie theatre, coffee house, etc.) 4.) Confirmation of hours that you have available for work; 5.) A short personality test; @ Michaele - not sure why you have a problem, I run Crysis Wars and Blue Mars on the same machine, and get comparable frame rates (which is not surprising, its based on the same graphics engine), and have used BM on both Windows XP and Windows 7. As far as the requirements to run it, CryEngine2 has 4 graphics level settings, and I would guess the min sys requirements would be the same as for Crysis, which uses all 4 levels. Blue Mars uses levels 3 & 4 (high and very high), so has higher minimums.
