Can someone explain about skyboxes please. I read on one site that said you have to buy land to build a sky box, but on another site it never mentioned anything about purchasing land, also once built is the skybox a permanent fixture, as I fell out of the temporary one I made (no walls) and went crashing to the ground at the rate of knots, landing in a complete heap at the feet of some unsuspecting guy!! Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

A skybox is really just a floating house. So you can build one in (or above) a sandbox but it won't stay there. it will be returned or deleted in the usual way. If you want it to be permanent you need to build on your land.

Once its there it will stay in the same way as a house on the ground.

And walls are a very good idea! And don't leave holes in the floor, your friends won't like it when they fall through.

Some time ago someone did place a skybox above my land. I did notice this because suddenly someone else was using prims that belonged to me (where I pay my monthly fee for).

I did send an IM to this person with the request to remove the skybox. This person did choise not to react on the 3 IMs I did send (she was online). So finally I returned the prims that where used by "others" (meaning the objects were returned to the inventory of the original person who placed it). So no more skybox.

You see, even a skybox uses prims and resources... and for that you have to own land.

When people buy a plot of land, they own from the ground all the way straight up. They can build anywhere in the slice of area....whether its on the ground or in the sky.

So when you're building a skyhouse without owning the land under it, you're essentially building on someone elses property. And they most likely will not take too kindly to that.

Yes, the sky house is a permanent fixture...until you take it back into inventory or delete it.

btw, the next time you're hurtling to the ground at a high rate of speed, I suggest clicking on the "fly" button at the bottom of your screen. Its saved my butt several times.

I would have just deleted the floor and replaced it with a phantom one :)

LOL

Now THAT would be funny to watch...especially with a trampoline script that hasn't been tuned down for safety.

Just a gratuitous drooling comment here. I'm debating whether or not to buy a Svarga skybox.

I don't need a skybox. I have a perfectly nice home on the ground. The prims would be a serious drain on the land. The purchase price would put a significant dent in my L$ wallet. Not to mention that my main will have a fit if I start adding houses to my inventory. But...

The Svarga build is calling to me. Those richly textured walls, the lofty elegant spires, the whole other wordly design floating serenely in the sky. Svarga is one of my favorite places in SL, and this would be like owning a small part of it.

I think a lot of people have a thing for skyboxes. There's something about a house in the clouds that's just appealing.

Or maybe I just read Silver Metal Lover a few too many times.

We have one of the C9 skyboxes just because I love the concept. I almost never even visit. But it's like a habitrail for people and who could not like that!

Far above my house (700m) I have a platform where I can build any setting I would liketo have to make pictures.
At time when my mood is wierd enough, I just jump down instead of TPing :P

I like having something suporting skyboxes so I made a 700m tall tree.

I made the middle parts phantom to reduce the chance that someone would hit them while flying.

Oohhh, I feel the same way about that Svarga skybox. Go ahead and buy it. Think of it as providing support for the beautiful Svarga sim.

Be sure and buy a chute....

I have jumped off pose balls so many times and found myself falling to the ground. Very interesting experience until I go splat on the land or find myself being chased by sharks under the sea. Oh and the Linden's will not replace your pretty party dress if you ruin it in the fall.

I hope no-one minds me necroposting an old thread like this-I thought it would be a better alternative to a totally new one on the topic ;)

I'm curious about skyboxes and visibility. I see many mentions of skyboxes, and even in this thread someone commented that there are loads of them around-but I would expect that to 'block off' the SL 'sky' to people below, yet I have not noticed any. Is there some texturing trick that keeps them invisible from below, or perhaps some artifact of the LODing in SL that renders them invisible from a distance? Is it just a case of taking advantage of draw distance?

Just draw distance- you'd have to have it set pretty high to spot most skyboxes (and look up) as they're usually up at 500m + altitude.

When you're avitar is in free fall, just hold down the space bar.
With practice, you can stop, gracefully hovering 1m above the ground.
As in all things, timing is everything. :p
