I bought my land a year and a half ago. Until last week, it had an empty strip of Linden protected land behind it. Now it has railroad tracks. No trains yet.

Yes it's sad cars don't work or they seem to all go way too fast for the lag & steering. Still roads are great to flollow and they give a front & back to properties so you don't have 20 shops facing different directions. Also having roads in a sim means the sim will never reach it's pirm limits and fewer residents per sim which reduces lag.
We could have people employed as tour bus drivers or even a decent rail network would be great, TP should be rarer I think, I've seen houses with no provision to access inside or other floors than teleport. Who needs doors & stairs?

I can't work out how LL would expect to attract motor corporations to a world where cars don't work and there is no infrastructure for them.

"Yes maam the RL version crashes like that too when you cross postcode boundries"

Flying being just as uncontrollable is only better because there's less to run into up there and you don't fall.

Well, tried taking a road trip. First sim border crossing I attempted (slowely mind you) resulted in a quicksand dip where I ended up hovering 100 feet in the air without the car. I was still in a seated position, and my passenger couldnt see me. (she stayed in the car). I had to reboot to recover. Tried again after relogging. Made it over two borders, then MORE QUICKSAND and ended up TWO SIMS AWAY. Lost the car somewhere, but it returned after a ten minute hiatus in the twilight zone after somebodys auto-return sent it back. WTF?????? This totally BLOWS. Something has gone dreadfully wrong with our SL border transitions. Ive suffered minor quicksand dips in the past, but rarely did they zap you off the map. Are vehicles no longer usefully functional in SL? HEY LINDENS, YOUR FIXING THIS RIGHT?????

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Never mind the roads, what's all this ripply stuff you can't even walk on (seems phantom) or that green, brown and grey lumpy stuff everywhere else?

Why isn't everything just a flat purple grid so I can build a camping brothel casino without wasting prims on building foundations?

:p

One Change -

Each sim should be a different color. That way you can tell the difference from Earl's Super Sexorama and Buffy's Best Bordello.

I'll settle for different shades of purple.

Maybe some pink.

I have a dream...
I have a dream where vehicle use flight scripts and detect the road...
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Protocol/AutoBahn
I have a dream where LL adds overhanging prims to prevent that sinking effect.

---
I have made roads and walkways across sim borders and the key is to link together a large chunk of prims and overhang the next sim with it keeping the center in your sim.

Then repeat in the next sim to create two overlapping pieces.

Next lower one piece .1m to prevent texture flicker.

PS: Why is there not a "Building" Wiki?
The above "How to build across sim borders" would be useful.

That overlapping/overhanging thing I think was recommended by a Linden as the answer to that problem for sim-crossing builds. I don't remember a time it was ever good. Back in 2005 I remember falling through a bridge on a road somewhere.

I use to post in the land management forum to get LL to fix those buggy roads.

The roads serve to connect the land, they fill a niche in the psyche of many. Like why people have bathrooms and kitchens in their homes. Everything in SL can be explained that way, from hair styles to homes. You can learn alot about humanity if you slow down and take a look at the world.
