I'm trying to figure out if someone's trying to scam me, someone sent this from Linden_Lab@mail.vresp.com but, I doubt it's real, can anyone tell me if it is? Thanks in advance From: someone An upgrade of our billing system recently revealed minor discrepancies in your billing information. To get everyone back on track we are asking that you update your payment method via the website as soon as possible. If you have a balance due it will be billed to your account within 24 hours of your update. If you do not update your information and you have a balance due when we bill, your account will go delinquent. As always with delinquencies, you will then have 7 days to pay your balance. After 7 days the account will go on hold and you will not be able to login without clearing your balance. After 30 days your account will go defunct and you will lose any inventory, land and L$ associated with the account. To upgrade your payment information:
1) Go to secondlife dot com 2) Login to your account 3) Click upgrade payment method 4) Upgrade with either credit card or Paypal, your choice 5) Follow instructions 6) You’re done!
If you have any questions regarding your account status, or have difficulty making changes to your account, please contact billing through the support portal: hxxp://cts.vresp.com/c/?LindenLab/064233cb86/ed09f7bcae/d9bf9fa50c
Thank you! Linden Lab

This is SOOOOOO obviously a scam. Just look at the link they give: hxxp://cts.vresp.com/u?064233cb86/ed09f7bcae/74fc691
Does that look like a link to any LL website you've ever seen? Click DELETE... Don't even click the Unsubscribe link...

NO this is probably not a scam. One of the login messages when you come into SL now mentions that you may have received an email from their billing department asking to update your billing info.
HOWEVER. To be sure you that no one has cloned LL's legit message, do not use links in the email. Just log into your account directly from the second life website, in a fresh browser.

The link in the email takes you to Linden Lab's servers. Vresp.com being a mass mailing service, links in emails will link back to them so they can track clicks for their customers - it then redirects to the intended URL. This is a legit email. I would advise not ignoring it, if you've received it.

You can update securely from there. Princess Ivory

they used that service provider before but i never use links just in case i do it manually because someone might be spoofing them if they find out what service provider they use. There was a blog entry though saying they would be asking people to update their account info that doesn't eliminate the possibiity of someone then using this blog info to create a fake email

Whatever it is I would never click a link in an email. Just go to the main secondlife webpage. I'm sure some crooks will be trying to steal accounts sooner or later and it will look just like those.

What I found odd is its a billing error email but at the bottom, they give you a link to opt out of these emails in the future? How else would they inform you - by snail mail?
Always go to the main site first.

I received the exact same email.
The thing I don't understand is that all my accounts do have current billing info. Heck, I just bought Lindens about twenty minutes ago.

From: someone I dont see how after 3 years of sl there is suddenly discrepancies in my paying method?? Apparently they've gotten tired of screwing up the game and have decided to break authentication (last month) and now billing. Even a stopped clock is correct twice a day; I can't but imagine that it takes affirmative effort to make such vast blunders so often.

This is probably the result of your bank having blocked LL from billing you. The method described is the way that you update your info...just go there yourself, do not use a link provided.
Many US banks have blocked LL from billing them because the billing is taking place in the UK. My bank finally conceeded to remove the block, but only until the end of the year.
I think perhaps the US customers should put together a letter or petition to have LL return to billing US customers from within the US. These problems are only going to get worse...

I received this and live chat told me it was because I had three accounts on the same credit card. I was instructed to change one of them, and I was told which one I should change. Your reason for receiving it may be different.
The trouble is you aren't told what's wrong, and you can't even look at your billing info to see if there's a problem because their "upgraded" system will delete your billing info when you try to look at it. That's intentional. No joke. You can't examine your own billing info.
In my case they didn't tell me which account had a problem or what the problem was. I would not have been able to fix this without help.
LL needs to hire someone who can examine anything they intend to send to more than a few people, to predict how humans might react, 'cause they currently have no clue.

That's intentional. No joke. You can't examine your own billing info. There used to be a sneaky way to tell, but (at least for me) that's been broken for a while now as well . You'd pick "Increase Your Credit", type in an amount and at the bottom it would list your payment method, the last few digits of your credit card and the name on the card. You'd then simply just close your browser to avoid an actual charge. People that had problems at the time would have everything listed except their name would be blank, preventing any charge from going through. For the last month or two it seems broken though, it just shows everything blank for me now despite the fact that they can still bill my card.

From: Anya Ristow I received this and live chat told me it was because I had three accounts on the same credit card. I was instructed to change one of them, and I was told which one I should change. I hate to say this, but you simply can't trust what Support tells you in cases like this. The exact same thing happened when LL made a policy change to sell limits on the Lindex -- they did NOT properly communicate that policy change to Support, and as a result, different people got told at least three different stories by Support. I suspect this is a similar problem. The fact is that there is no reason for LL to have a problem with three accounts on the same card. Now if it was THIRTY accounts, perhaps that would indicate fraud, but three is not an unusually large number of avs for SL players. I myself got this email, but so far only for my third av, who is the only one who is not premium. She was "payment info used" though because I paid the $10 fee for her as an alt. The thing that struck me as completely new when I updated her billing info is that I was asked to provide the 3-digit security code. I don't remember being asked to provide that in the past, and I have read many posts indicating the problem with so many people's credit cards rejecting LL charges was due to the fact that they did NOT ask for that 3-digit security code. So I'm thinking they finally smarted up and changed over to a credit processor that does make use of the security code, which helps to reduce fraud AND makes credit card payments to LL more likely to go through without failing. I went ahead and updated the info for all three of my avs, using the same card for each, and LL had no complaints whatsoever. You may think I'm insane for believing LL actually did something right. But hey, if they did, they stupidly failed to mention it to anyone, causing panic among users and unnecessary support requests. So see, still same old LL!

I think LL are now capturing CC security codes in an effort to improve relations with CC companies and banks.

It's Linden Labs sending the email not your bank and you still have a 3 digit security code on you CC issued by a uk bank so I suspect LL will be requesting updates from everyone with cc details on file regardless of their location.

This has been raised on Jira - see https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-347Please vote on this issue. No internet service provider should be sending e-mails relating to accounts, passwords and/or billing from third party e-mail addresses, nor be using third party URLs in such e-mails. We need to make sure that LL heeds this and changes their policy accordingly. Matthew

This whole thread is a non-issue. What a waste of time reading through these.
What part of the following directions from the email don't you understand?
>>>>>>>> To upgrade your payment information:
1) Go to secondlife dot com 2) Login to your account 3) Click upgrade payment method 4) Upgrade with either credit card or Paypal, your choice 5) Follow instructions 6) You’re done! >>>>>>>>
Is it the part where they tell you to GO to the Secondlife website?
no...that makes sense
Is it the part where they tell you to log into your account? (using your personal password that only you should know)
no....that makes sense
Is it the part where they ask you to upgrade your account using whatever payment method you want?
no...that makes sense
So, now people are running around with thier hair on fire thinking the sky is falling because they got an email about payment information. And yet, I see people downloading a un-sanctioned viewer by a coder who could very well have trojan programs written into it.
wow....just...wow
Get a grip
