While doing some exploit searching on the new blog I stumbled upon what seems to be the page to post a new thread in a forum.

https://blogs.secondlife.com/post.jspa

It gives an error if you try to post the new thread though, as no forum is specified.

What does everyone think? Forum changeover imminent? Help me find some more forum related pages as well.

The software is Clearspace. I signed up for there demo using some fake company details.

Here is an example of what a Clearspace forum looks like.

What you found is the new Blogs, nothing more, or less. If you log in, using your SL avatar name and PW, you can leave comments, for blog entries with commends enabled. Seems to work well enough, and even has text formatting, spell checking, and the ability to edit a post after you hit Send.

The new Forums are a different task, but coming soon, or so certain Lindens say.

History has shown, that The Company will do whatever it wants, regardless of what The Customers want. We will either make use of the service that The Company provides, or as always, we will form our own services to work around The Company.

They're going to do, whatever they're going to do.. and we can either use it, complain about it and risk being banned from SL, or move on and find 3rd party solutions.

I don't personally think it's the best move they could make.. but we'll see how it goes. I will follow the bulk of the scripting community, as that's really the only reason I frequent these forums.

The new blog channels will be really good if each channel head posts at least one a week. Is not necessary that it be the channel head Linden everytime. Anyone in the department will do. Even if theres nothing to report. Is more about keeping the door open really I think. Even if is sometimes something like

"Hey guys, how you doing? Nothing much to report from us this week. Just thought I'd say Hi, and if theres anything you want to let us know about then leave a comment. Have fun and I maybe see you inworld at Office Hours. Laters."

I'll check from my Mac shortly, once my daughter finishes her homework. I've only tried posting from Win XP so far, and that worked. Though when I went back and looked at the blog, my edit to my post was not visible. Yet if I chose edit again, the edit window had the edited text visible? Still has several bugs to work out, certainly.

Hopefully that'll be fixed pretty quickly, they're being very proactive with getting all the kinks worked out.

Yoz just posted a comment on WEB-982 asking about it and Blue and I were trying to work out WEB-983 earlier. there are definitely some little things but overall especially for an LL release I think you'd agree that this is going pretty well.

"You can't create discussion threads here, but as discussions appear they might have answers you need."

Let's hope that's not a permanent feature.

/me shouts as loud as she can: NO POPULAR TOPICS or POPULAR POSTERS!!! NO!!!

Please, for the love of dog, do not include that kind of spam bait in the new forums. NO!!

I'm looking for content, damnit. Not ginormous side bars, not sigs & pix so big that I can only see 1-2 posts per page like at slu. Have you people never used forums before on the internet?? There's a reason phpbb and vbulliten are so popular. And they're free!!

/me looks for something to kick.

You never have been able to create new discussions in the Blog, and that is what they have this software set up for.

It remains to be seen if they will attempt to use this for Forums as well. I hope not, as it does not appear to be well suited to prolonged discussions. Though the ability to format our posts again would certainly be welcome!

They have never had a blog with intergrated forums. Though have stated that is what they want, and now they do have it. think they will use it?

Oh I knew that however I don't think they're going to use it for the general resident to resident forum type discussions, for that I think they have something else planned. For resident to Linden and resident to resident discussions specifically based around blog posts however once they turn on the discussions system and a few other cool features I doubt they'll have any more need of Linden threads on the forums.

It's quite possible that they may decide to do away with the unstructured forums as they are now in which case the only discussions would be those that they specifically have a topic for in the form of a blog post or a starter discussion post and have that be the only "official" communication forum. It would make a lot of sense on their end because they could control the flow and topic of discussions which of course has many downsides since the freedeom of the forums are one of it's best points but at the same time that might also mean that they could converse with residents more coherently which would be a good thing.

It's quite correct that for LL to control discussions, they'd actually have to be engaged in the discussions. Right now, Lindens being so engaged may seem like a good idea to us and to them, but I'm not sure that will last. Maybe that's really not the most productive use of their time.

Sure, open communications from and to LL is good. But how much, at the expense of what other management tasks?

Oh, also, I don't think there's currently a plan to do away with resident forums, nor to try to force-fit it all into Yahoo!Answers format. I'm basing that on Blue's comment @ /327/cd/308275/1.html#post2331262 . Everything is subject to change, of course.

There is no risk in being banned from SL for complaining.

Griefing Lindens while complaining - like what happened at the OS meetings...sure a ban is eminent in that case and justified.
