I chose the 'only when I crash/have problems' option, but I also do it when it occurs to me that it's been a while since I did it last.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I clear it every Saturday or Sunday morning, as well as when I've had a particularly bad series of crashes, and often before big events (fashion shows, etc.)

I haven't cleared my cache in over 2 months. There hasn't been any need for it since then.

If the asset servers aren't borked, just logging out then back on again usually clears up any problems that I'm having. Otherwise, I just wait until I see an official blog entry saying the problems are all fixed before I log back in again.

As to why I don't need to clear my cache more often is a mystery to me.

Since some troubles I had in early versions, I clear my cache every time I log in... but now that I realize about it, I will try doing it only if there is any trouble.

I clear my cache fairly often, because I get into a state where textures refuse to fully download (very fuzzy textures that never fully rez). It is particularly noticable in stores.

The problem seemed to get worse when I upped the cache size, so now I am going to try a small cache. I suspect that what is happening is that my CPU (running at 100% always with SL) cannot finish updating the cache when a lot of textures change at once. So, (watching the texture console) downloading textures appears to stall. Actually, if I stand in one place long enough, I can watch textures go from clear to fuzzy ... I think they may age out of the cache, and then never fully reload.

If anyone has insight on this, I'd sure appreciate it!

Constantly...

I was told months ago by a friend that I should clear my cache every time I log off..... I base it on how long I've been on..... but it does seem to help if I'm having issues. The first thing I try is clearing cache. I'm not sure how often it 'should' be done....but I figure if I do it a couple times a week..I'm probably safe.

When I re-start the router and cold boot and defrag the computers on my network, which is once a week usually on a Sunday morning.

Sometines it gets cleared more often. depends on if I'm having problems.

Would clearing it toss your saved conversations?

No, provided that option is enabled in your preferences, they are saved as seperate text files on your computer.

As to why I don't need to clear my cache more often is a mystery to me.

"Clear your cache and relog" is the LL translation for "is it plugged in?" It's kinda their first step to get weed out the easy fixes. 35% of people responding to this poll clear their cache on a regular basis and I suspect it's done to avoid problems.

I'd be interested in hearing more from the people who do it regularly, either at every relog or once/week or more, on why they clear it and how they think the SL client is behaving (crashes, everything gray) lately vs a few weeks ago.

Seems everytime I clear cashe I end up with some inventory missing so I don't do it very often at all. Maybe just a fluke but it seems it happens mostly when I clear it.

I clear religiously once a week. It's just something I've gotten used to doing on saturday mornings. I honestly don't have any problems with SL; no inventory, L$ or anything loss. Occasional lag and BSOD crashes, but nothing major.

I cleared mine a while back. When I returned I was turned into a female newbie, an ugly one too. I tried everything to get back to nornal but nothing worked. Finally, after a few days of coming in just to fix myself it worked, I was back to my normal self again. I haven't touched the cache since.

To top it off, some idiot tried to hit on me. Here I was trying desperately to get my male form back and I'm being hit by someone. I took time to tell him to look at my name, take a hint.

Also, I got no help from Linden or anyone from there although I constantly wrote and called them. Good ole Linden, that's why I admire them so much.

I've cleared my cache ONCE.

I've completely de-installed secondlife and re-installed fresh perhaps 2-3 times...

in the last 3.5 years.

(total, both for me and my less-outspoken primary 'alt' as well)

I'd ask "why should one ever have to manually clear a cache?" or "why do we accept this as normal?", but that would probably be considered trolling (even though it isn't meant to be).

You know, that's actually a good idea. I wonder if upon start up, Secondlife.exe could clear the cache EVERY time; just get rid of that option altogether in the edit/preferences. We have to log off to clear it anyway...

I chose every time I log in/out from the list, but I could have chosen everytime I have problems. It amounts to the same thing. As my computer is barely able to handle SL, one trip to a texture store is enough to slow me to glacial speed. Sometimes I have to log out just to clear my cache, so it could be twice per session. This maneuver always improves my viewer's performance -- for a while.

Zone Alarm clears my PC cache everyday.. Norton does it on demand, i do it simply because cache is not needed when im done with the PC.. it takes up space.. demands CPU time to access, and though SL cache isnt known to harbour unwanted spies.. its just a precautionary thing i take care of.. ive no guilt.. but neither do i see any reason to have something that the uninvited can use as a reliable resource or for infomation gathering. SL cache isnt threatening..its just me being methodical.. the less on my PC i dont use or know about the better.. the resource is mine not anyone elses.
