I don't understand why you need a plane Argent. Your flight feather doesn't work in RL?
I wish. No, I'm not Tronguy. Nor do I have a plane, though I DID used to crew for hot air balloons.

You'd make perfect crew, Argent. Just start talking about Linux and packets and geekstuff while they hold the envelope over your head, and they won't even need those propane thingies. :D

One thing that occurs to me is that the OP may have accidentally renamed a harmless file by clicking on it and then typing his password.

There could be a completely harmless explanation to all of this.

It wouldn't be the same without the twenty foot long flame to warm your paws by.

Totally possible. I have two monitors - run SL on one and keep web browser and other stuff on the other. Sometimes I will go to log into SL, think that window is active and start typing my password - end up typing it into a firefox find window.

So, the OP somehow thinks Amara is somehow involved in his situation?

I'm running a Mac with Leopard. THis morning I turned on the computer and found a file on my desktop from someone seeming to solicit email from me, and citing 3 URLs which I have not looked at yet. The name of the file is my SL password with file extension 'rtf'. I suppose the password can be gotten at for this purpose, but it scares me to see it there without any action on my part.

Should I call this to Linden Lab's attention, and if so, how? Or is it nothing to be concerned about?

Abd how do I go about changing my password?

Thank you all, folks.

In order for that file to show up on your desktop:

1. You would have to have put the file there yourself
2. Someone else would have to sit at your computer and put it there
3. Someone would have to log into your computer remotely and put it there.
4. By any of the above means, access to your computer was gained through a malware infection such as a trojan, rootkit or keylogger.

Also, someone would have to hack the Linden servers and decrypt your password file.

If you were socially engineered into giving your password through a phony site and also downloaded a file, that could explain it.

There are very few viruses/trojans/worms/spyware infections for OSX and only one in the wild ATM which is installed through a pirated copy of OSX downloaded from P2P sites.

To actually install a piece of malware on OSX that can use and/or damage the operating system you would have to download the file, click it, give your password and install it.

So, for someone in SL to put that file there they would have to get your password somehow, get past your firewall, know your OSX password to access your desktop and connect to your system. You would also have to have file sharing turned on and have your desktop as a shared folder.

There are now two more trojans for OSX:

OSX/Tored-A is only a proof-of-concept and has not infected anyone.

OSX/Jahlav-C requires the user to enter his password to install, which no user should do.

There is more going on with the OPs thread than has been told. The technical details don't match the ocurrance.

If the URLS in the OP's file are the ones here:

/327/e1/319696/1.html#post2419310

then he copied Amaranthim's response to one of his questions to a file on his computer.

THEN

he accidentally renamed the file while typing his SL password.

(and btw on the Mac it is very easy to save a web page to your desktop without meaning to.)

No, but I know him from way back, back in the dark days when this was still called the "ARPAnet" and you had to be on a DoD contract to have legitimate access to it. :)

Given that the folder contains 3 URLs and he associated all of this to Amar, I would lay money on this.

The lime is just decoration - you know, kind of like that green leafy stuff they sometimes toss on plates thinking it makes things look pretty.

DARPA, the DoD Advanced Projects Research Agency. They invented UFOS, the GoreBot, and faked the moon landing too.
