In profile I see 6 categories: textures, modeling, scripting, architecture, event planning and custom characters.
Ok now, what about dj, dancer, sculpts, web design, 2d art, games?
Anything else?
For those who know me, I'm reviving an old project of mine, but on a new basis. It would be a website where you could register your interests and be found. So let's say someone looks for a DJ they could have a look and find you... It's something very simple to do, actually it's 80% done, but i need some criterias....
Almost everything will be OPT-IN should you ask, hehe. And when I say almost, the only exception i can think of is that you won't be able to register a land anonymously (because if it is a group owned lands someone has to know who registered it). So the land will be opt-in but if you register it your name will be displayed publicly.
I'll talk about it more in details when it's finished.
What about lands, i cannot compete with SL search engine but i can add some rating features (design, people for instance). What other criterias would you like to see? Shall the people, djs, builders, scripters... be rated too? (if they want to).
I don't think i'll implement anything negative because i'm trying to make something simple and fun. So, if the land is laggy then it's laggy but it won't appear on the site. Not sure about comments either because I don't feel like moderating all day...
Oh and any thoughts about the mature/adult/PG stuff? Shall I make everything PG? Not care at all?
TIA for the inputs...

Machinima.
I think it might be good - I can see people and their skills more than land, though. Maybe keeping it simple would make it ten times as useful.

Thanks. Forgot animation too. You are right, I'm trying to make less categories.
So far that makes: Builder, DJ, 2D Artist(photos, textures and ads), Sculptist,Machinima, Scripting,Fashion (custom character+model),Social(Games+Events+Dance and what not),Animation,Web
I know about lands, it was my old project and didn't work at all. When I thought about it I figured out I should have focused on people. But the code is already there so i'll keep it for those who want to use it.

Hmm i can add that but that wouldn't make much sense rating you for your exploring skills for instance, so i should separate skills and interests.
Thanks for the ideas though good ones in there.

OK, I'm adding Teaching and Selling as skills, for the other stuff I will make it so that you can add your own interests, that drags me into moderating things but that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Yeah, that's why it's going to be moderated. New interests won't show unless validated.

Scripting - HTML - CSS - PHP - Javascript
Programming - C++ - C# ... etc.
Besides computer languages, it might also be valid to check human languages, English, Spanish, German etc.

Interesting project ... I just want to quibble with your "artist" categories a bit ... At the moment you have 2D artist, including texturing, photography and ad design, and sculpture artist (or did you mean somebody with sculptie skills?). This doesn't begin to cover the sorts of art available inworld. In particular, it excludes performance art and interactive installations ... all the NPIRL-type art. How about the following ... Artist - RL skills - paintings, RL photography, digital images etc. Any art that is created in RL and then uploaded. Artist - SL skills - inworld sculpture, performance art, installations etc. Some inworld photography would also fall into this category. Photographer - inworld, non-art photography - everything from fashion shoots and weddings to journalism and documentary. Machinima Graphic design - ads, logos, layouts etc. Texture artist should be a separate category as although it uses the same tools (Photoshop/Gimp), it's a very specialist set of skills. You could also do with some categories for writing skills ... perhaps journalism, translation, adverts, RP ... If it was me, I would start by letting people add their own interests AND skills (moderated) for a while, until you see what categories naturally emerge. I think exploring is sort of a skill, or rather the knowledge gained from exploring is an asset. There should be a chance to rate people like Mari or Yevad Doobie who have such a tremendous wealth of knowledge about the mainland.

Well, yes ...what if you choose, say 8 interests that will be your skills? Then you could choose some more...maybe 50 I don't know just for display....only skills being rated?

My list was based on the assumption that you were working on something related to improving use of the interests tab's theme, not a job/employment agency. SL is full of job agencies. Most of them run by people who themselves need a job. Not much market potential there, even less if moved offworld. I'd suggest just going with a way for people to interest search for others in SL. I'm thinking of proposing a revision to the interests tab for SL: Remake it as 5 fields you put keywords into, space separated. The fields would be: professional, commercial, arts & entertainment, political/faith, social. One cat. for the job people and business life people One cat. for merchants and buyers One cat. for music, dance, clubs, machina, etc. One cat. for the SL politcal and religious types. One cat. for hobbies, socializing themes, play, games, etc. Now add a tab to search. To search interests. People pick a category from a pulldown (with no all option), and check off the proper ratings (PG, mature, adult). Then they can either: Browse - sorted by the popularity of a keyword (or alpha). Search, by typing in up to 3 keywords at a time. It returns profiles, sorted by how many keywords that profile has in common with you (if at least one was in your search), and secondly by how many it has from the ones you typed.

From: Pussycat Catnap I'm thinking of proposing a revision to the interests tab for SL:
Yeah when you think about it if lands could just select tags in a list, they could write something meaningful in their description instead, Linden Labs would save gigabytes in their database, and search would be much easier. They could do same for profile as well, as per your idea.

OK, please forgive the poor design, do you think this could be usable? Too many categories? http://sldetails.com/Basically I've added what was mentioned in this thread. Less categories would return more results that's the point. Now I could make sub categories, what do you think?

Ok it is still very buggy, and categories are broken but let me know if that would be acceptable: http://sldetails.com/You can select Social or Music for categories.

From: Twisted Pharaoh Well it's not a job/employment agency, I'm just getting web xp because I'm bad at developping sites Thank you all for the ideas, I'll send a link soon in the sites forum. I think it would be useful to have a current database where someone looking for, say, a sim manager or machinimatographer or historically accurate build creator, could find someone. I think there's a disconnect when it comes to finding what one needs, so it reverts to word-of-mouth and subsequent recycling of the same few names.
