While at a beach party setting, I was approached by some dude asking if I was interested in buying ladies' attire. I asked him where his store was, and he said he didn't have a store, but he and his partner have some clothes to sell. He asked me how many Lindens I had and I asked him how much he was selling the clothes for. He summoned up his female partner and she just stood there while he talked. He never would give me a price, but asked how much I was willing to pay. I finally offered 20L, and he was shocked. I told him I haven't even seen the clothes yet, so how could I make a decent offer?
Is this typical? Do avatars just sidle up to others and offer up their goods? I guess I was just expecting to be led to a store, and not harrassed on the beach.
I'm a newbie, folks. Be gentle!!

/me pokes her head out of the alleyway as AndiCat walks past. "Hey... Wanna buy a watch?"
I've seen stuff like this before but, thankfully, it isn't common. It sounds like you're using common sense - keep it up.
edit: also, note that anything that could be described as a "beach party" is almost certainly not a public place - it might be open to the general public but beware of thinking of it as public land..

Oh, people do all kinds of crazy things - that is what makes Second Life so fun I don't think this was typical, but it wasn't really harassment either. It's possible that, because you looked new, this guy thought you might be interested in buying some clothing that his girlfriend was just going to dump at a yard sale. You are smart not to buy something sight unseen, but I wouldn't take this as harassment. And just so you know, 20L is worth about 8 cents in real money.

It takes all kinds I had a guy offer to sell me "drugs" I said no thanks and he then put me in a cage (caged me) and asked again hehe. He really wanted money I guess. I have also had to kick people off my place cause they were soliciting and yes many people try to do this without a store. So yes it does happen and it seems to go in waves as I have not had this problem since about february and during christmas and in january just after christmas it was actualy getting a bit outa hand although my traffic stats were REALLY HIGH hehe
I think after I banned about the 10th mobile solicitor it started to calm down

LOL, I remember when the Hell's Kitchen RP Sim first opened up, and I played there for...about 2 days anyway...yeah some guy dressed like an (American) 1920's vagabond walks up ta my av and does the same thing, only he's sellin watches, hats & shoes...LOL This is EXTRA funny ta me cause we got this all over Chicago & always have...so anyway, after a little "Old World" haggling over prices I bought some boots. Not bad, so he tries on a few hats, I buy one, then he shows me a few guns... IF folks are gonna do this at LEAST wear/show the customer what they are gonna buy, heh It actually wasn't bad, good merchandise...told him he should rent out some booth space, but he prefers playin the 20's hustler, lol

Well at least you weren't taken in by it, there is a chance you wouldn't have got anything for your money. As a newbie, pop over to Free Dove where there are loads of freebies for new avators

While walking up the Golden Mile in Hong Kong in RL a guy came out of an alleyway shadow and asked me if I wanted to buy a copy watch. I said 'sure, can I pay for it with copy money?' He told me to p**s off. I thought it was fair.
Oh well...

Thanks for all the responses, peeps!
So 20L really doesn't amount to much, huh? I'm still learnin'!! I once took a survey and came away with my first 54L and thought I'd hit the jackpot!! Too funny.
Once again, I appreciate all your help!

A guy landed on my land the other day. Asked if I wanted to buy a gun or furniture. I declined politely and he said F you and something about my mother lol. I was on the point of freezing and ejecting him and he flew off.
The other thing I've seen is on a certain beach, women selling sex for money which is a bit tacky.

Well if they can demo the goods on the GF then deliver the goods at a reasonable price without harrassing people, why not I suppose

A few days ago I had a guy give me stuff. It wasn't anything I was particularly interested in but the workmanship was quite good and we had a chat about his skills and the stuff he has made. So then he asks me for some money. I declined. He insisted... this didn't end well for him.

This is one of the things I find funny in SL, When newbies go up to people in camp zones are say "you leave NOW give me job", or you buy this .... reminds me of the "lookie lookie's" in spain To be honest its a tought time in SL for new folks, they dont quite understand how things work and a LOT of the camping areas are farmed by alts making RL cash rather than newbies getting a few lindens for the game. I guess if offering goods in the "street" is going to get them a few quid then thatsw a good thing .. and tbh... its that sort of mentality that will ultimately give them success ...rather than just sitting on there bums in a camp zone or raping the money trees.

Usually when I run into someone like that I try to offer them advice about making their own wares, and selling them, instead of selling freebies... My reasoning is if they make something themselves and it's cool, it's much more likely to sell =)

No one should Solicit in Public places unless its Mature Land.
Even then it would be a good idea to check with the owner, since most Mature parcels arent for that sort of thing.
And of course even many places that are, they want patrons to hire their employees rather than "freelancers"
When the Adult flag comes about - People should further limit Solicitation to Adult flagged land.
If the entire activity isnt banned first. Ask Dan L.

I first thought this thread was about selling your body. But it turns out to be about selling goods. I didn't know they call that soliciting too

Once again, I appreciate all your help! 20 L$ is 7 or 8 cents, in US$. Even less, when you calculate with the purchase price instead of the sales price of 1 US$ = 266 L$. But don't worry, the prices on the grid are quite low. Clothes usually sell for prices between 100 (single pieces) to 1000 L$ (complete outfits), that's 1 - 10 dollars. I'd always buy them in a store or mall though, not from street merchants
