Wouldn't it be funny if the health of the real economy were tracked by the tips going to strippers? Front page of the Wall Street Journal: "Investors react to the report from Brandy that fewer dollar bills are being deposited in her G-string."

Well if the Economist magazine has the Big Mac Index as a measure of currency value, why can't SL have the Nekie Dancer Index as a measure of enconomic activity ?

Makes perfect sense to me. Certain activities can be a good proxy for overall economic activity. Plus dancer tips are easy to measure.

Being a part time economist and dancer I rather like the idea.

I give you a solid 8.2. You can come across as very pure if you want to, but inside, you're a dirty, dirty girl. Shame on you, and congratulations.

With a great deal of time and effort, I make enough from my shape business to provide all my in-game pocket money. If I continue to work hard, I anticipate that by the end of the year, I may actually be able to cover at least some part of my US$40 tier as well.

But to put this in perspective, I make more from ONE HOUR of RL free-lance web work than I have from 3 or 4 months of sales in SL. If I would put as much time into my freelance work as I do into my SL business, I'd be pulling in at least US$thousand a month in extra income.

The irony continues. I've actually cut back my freelance work load to have more time to play in SL, so every hour I spend in-world is costing me money.

Quite obviously, my "business" in SL is a labor of love.

I am so with you on this. So far I'm telling myself I'm making myself happy but never have I passed up so much RL income to "play". But I have been working a lot for years in RL (12-17 hour days but paid well) and not having much time to play and be creative so I figure SL is saving me money on therapy!

But its something I'm keeping an eye on...SL is seductive especially when the money doesn't seem quite real.

What does it say about us that starting a new (extremely low-paying) business is the way in which we play? I'm not sure I want to know the answer.... :D

There are a number of cautions for me to bear in mind, though. First and foremost, the minute my SL business feels like a burden (as in "I *have* to finish my new shape";), I immediately take a break and go dancing or landscape my land (it's been razed and rebuilt several times now). The only excuse for spending that much time in SL on business projects is to have fun. Period.

It's also, for me, a constant fight not to let RL free-lance obligations slide away entirely. Doing work for clients, then not taking the time to bill them for it, tends to be counter-productive.

I'm new to this thing, but I think I have found an easy and painless way to get cashflow.

In rl, I run a t-shirt shop on the web. Whenever my sales get up over $100, I transfer the amount to paypal and then spend a portion of that in sl. It's almost like 'found' money, since I didn't have to do anything extra for it (the work was done a long time ago), and until it is transferred to my rl bank account, I consider it web/play money.
