There are just as many other things out there to distract from what I should be doing. So - no one can blame SL for being addictive or wasting too much time. People just find something else.
Two weeks seemed like forever though. It's good to be back. Hey Weston! I'm so glad the show turned out well!  And it's great to have you back in this neck of the woods. We missed ya! |

They put a levy on my account and took out 1380 dollars(that wasn't actually in there so now it's minus) and I have no idea why and it's Sunday and have to wait till tomorrow to find out and it's driving me crazy.:/ /me takes more happy pills.

I was installing the newest GLViewer and I was also cleaning out old files to defrag and other 'house cleaning'... Somehow I uninstalled SL - I uhm.. erased my chat logs.. all of them- since 2006 - i have a memory like a sieve.. I can't remember anything and now have lost any connection to the last almost four years  - it doesn't matter for the important stuff 'cause I cannot forget some things  - but now the dates of said things are irretrievably lost . I cannot tell you how lousy that feels

Some operating systems save previous versions of your folders automatically. I know Vista does. Maybe your chat logs are still around somewhere, Amar - but I guess you've thought of that.

I cannot tell you how lousy that feels Pretty much all Windows systems put deleted items in the recycle bin and they can be 'restored' from there if you have not emptied it.

Oh I had been doing lots of cleaning... so before i noticed my idiocy - I had cleared old files, temp files, cached stuff and yes- Recycle Bin- so yes it's gone - all of it. But to be honest- although i am sad to have lost it - it doesn't really matter much - the important stuff is somewhat engraved in my own head. And my lappy is lighter! I am sorry it happened but you now..."they can't take that away from me.."

Search using Google for UnDelete tools (there should be a free one available or at least a demo of a commercial product) - if your computer has a FAT32 format drive instead of an NTFS format drive then there is a good chance you can undelete those files even if they are gone from the Recycle bin. However the longer you leave it and more you use the computer in the meantime, the more you risk those areas of the disk that still store your chat logs being overwritten. Some of the newer tools may even work on NTFS drives too.

Thanks! yvwm though I think that if you have already defragged your drive then you are truly hosed My advice for the future is to buy a USB flash drive/key (very inexpensive) and every so often copy your important data on to it, then keep it safe. This goes for not just chat logs but anything you value. Really you must or one day it will all go poof and that will feel worse than this sadly.

Poor Amar, I know the feeling well, as I seem to have some kind of computer disaster every couple of years. And it's ALWAYS at a time when I've just been thinking, "Gee, it's been at least 6 months since I backed this up... I should really do that soon."

i don't log chats, ever. pictures are the only thing on my puter that i would hate to lose, and i often load them onto CD's and store them that way. i probably ought to do that again. soon.
