I know that Ruthed means an avatar that has lost its new and improved shape and reverted to a default shape and that Borked means not working (FUBAR, SNAFU etc) but I would like some insight into how these words came to mean what they do.

Any old timers like to tell me?

"Ruthed" refer's to the original default avatar shape (she's probably in your library folder somewhere). The shape you (partially or fully) become when things go pear-shaped is that of Ruth.

I've heard "Borked" and used it a lot outside of SL, so I think it may be a deliberate misspelling of "broken" to emphasize the fact that it's all screwed up. It also has the advantage of sounding like the sweedish chef, who usually left mayhem in his path while saying things like bork bork bork...

The Urban dictionary pretty much confirms this (see def #3).

Ruth was the first SL avatar, from which all avatars take their basic shape, even male ones. I have no idea why she was called Ruth, but there you go. Since the bug seems to cause us to go back to the very basic form, the community and Lindens refer to it by the form, Ruth.

On borked... From the Urban Dictionary:

From: someone
The term "Borked" or "Borking" originated with conservative talk show hosts (primarily Rush Limbaugh) to describe someone who is denied something earned simply because they either aren't politically correct enough or aren't trusted - usually without cause. The usage is derived from Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork who though eminently qualified was deemed too "conservative" to serve as a Supreme Court judge.

Of course, net slang can't leave it alone, so to mock the word's creator, we use it against them :P

Yeah, my first thought was the Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show too.

Ruth is the defualt avatar mesh, and first avatar in SL, which we are all variations of, even Men.

I saw a movie on tv the other day called Ruthless People. Being a deranged SL addict, I of course assumed it had something to do with LL/SL. The movie has nothing to do with SL. Ruth reminds me of Agent Smith from the movie, The Matrix.

Ruth is one of the avatars in the library for new members now along with the ones like "city chic" and the furries. I don't remember that from when I signed up.

The one time I got ruthed I actually looked kind of cute :)

I still think someone should throw a "Come as Ruth" party...

I seem to recall that the Poser 4 Female avatar is named "Ruth", and that it is what LL based the SL avatar mesh on. Hence, the SL base avatar is "Ruth".

And yes, even males in SL are based on that female shape mesh. Clicking the "Male" button merely applies a set of morphs to the values on the female mesh. So when a male avatar loses his appearance attributes, he becomes "Ruth" - a cute 20-something girl.

I am so incredibly up for that. You'd have to wear your proper party clothes (black tie would be fun) but you'd have to turn up Ruthed.

I always use Ruth for testing animations on my furniture and the male guy too. What is his name by the way? I think Ruth is cute, especially since she's a lot smaller and finer than the bling bling pumped up females I usually see in sl.

Off topic but I'm having fun so ...

Partner is changing between main and alt like i dunno what. Just divorced Usher waiting for Bailey.

I'm not allowed to meet Bailey, apparently she is a bit on the weird looking side of things. A bit unfair to Newbies and hell for me :(

/me is going through drawer looking for small black book of ex girlfriends. Have fun while I can as they say ....

Maybe it has some Biblical connotations. Ruth anyway. I don't recall any references to being Borked, although I havn't read revelations lately.

I dont know if anybody added this or not but "borked" is a political term referring to attacking a persons character to destroy them as a judicial nominee. It's Named after Rober Bork who had this done to him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bork#.22Bork.22_as_a_verb

Knowing the story of Ruth I doubt it has a link to the bible unless they just looked at the names of the books. Probably easier to think of where all of the names come from, largely imagination.

BTW I'm married again and the book was burned ages ago.

Ruth does mean "Friend".

No matter: I am personally embarrassed I didn't make the Judge Bork connection. I need to make myself stay after school.
