From: Kyler Voom I still stand by my original newbie argument, however. I think there are many ways the problems with "First Land" could be solved (some have been mentioned in this thread already). And I still think you'd retain a lot more people and get more Premium members if you just gave them a 512 plot of land, even with a cheap house on it. After all, if you are *inside* a house, then the neighbors are not as annoying (especially if the gambling halls disappear)
Even under First Land, No one "Gave" you land. You still had to buy it. It was just that a portion of available land was set aside for First Time buyers. I found my plot of land through the classifieds here. I IM'ed the owner, she TP'ed me there I looked at the land and discussed the price. since she didn't list the land publicly, it couldn't be grabbed by bots or flippers. she even agreed to hold the land for sevral days, without deposit untill RL payday. No reason you can't Scan ads here on the forums, even post one describing what you are looking for. I'm actually glad I missed first land in hindsight. The little bit of extra work I did made it more gratifying in the end.

From: Brenda Connolly Even under First Land, No one "Gave" you land. Yes, I understand that. I'm just saying that if they *did* give away some land with Premium membership (that you couldn't just sell to the bots), then they would sell more memberships (in my opinion). Even other people in this thread have recommended rentals. Rentals are not selling Premium memberships to LL. It's great that the Land Barons are making money, but I'd personally be happier if LL was making the money so that they can stay in business for the long run and keep making the improvements to SL that are needed. Perhaps they make so much off island sales that they don't need Premium members anymore? Certainly seems to be the trend.

If you look at the first graph on this page, the drop-off of premium memberships is pretty dramatic. https://secure-web6.secondlife.com/whatis/economy-graphs.phpI would not be surprised if they don't announce some sort of premium incentive package to reverse this trend. I would also not be surprised if the word comes soon that they have sold the company. Feels like something is afoot. But I've been wrong before.

That graph is a drop in the rate of growth in the number of Premium memeberships. Its not a drop in premium memberships. Premium memberships are actually up. Consistantly. According to the graph.

From: Colette Meiji This could be an issue. I know: let's call it a "Graph bot". That will make it an issue, for sure.

From: PleaseWakeMeUp Idler I don't understand your reluctance to rent. Yeah, I guess the landlord there can disappear but the tradeoff is that the private islands seem to have a higher quality offering and can be cheaper. Cheaper? Yes, beacause you can drop your premium membership.
I no longer pay $10/month to Linden, I pay $9/month to my landlord who gives me full use of my 1024sqft parcel. I can even terraform.
Zero tier.
And I don't see any ad farms.
Happy? You bet.
Wake Well you did ok then, I heard of other people dropping their $10 per month premium to pay $15 per month to a landlord for 1024 with very few landowner abilities. Heck, if you look at what some people are asking for land they are charging their share or sim tier for the month to the tenant per week. There is also the pay half of what the land would cost you then pay near double the tier deal too. Maybe water views really are worth that much? No doubt some estate owners do provide good services for your dollar too but some would not I suspect too.

From: Yumi Murakami It's not a poverty thing though, it's a value thing.
Building your own scenes with Gary's Mod: US$9.99 forever.
Building your own personal space on MySpaces or FaceBook: free.
Playing a fighting game and also setting up your own house on Anarchy Online: free.
So US$20 plus $9.99 a month is always going to be a rather hard sell, unfortunately. Drawing stuff with Paint? Free. Building a webpage? Free. Playing Original Doom? Free. Playing a real fighting game setting up your own superbase or guild with real 21st century graphics $30 per month. Anachy online? Sorry got away from Commodore 64 graphic games

This could be an issue. Evidently not to LL. For whatever reason, they appear to not need Premium memberships for their revenue stream model. They have consistently devalued Premium benefits, to the point where it is simply a requirement for land ownership. I'm not sure why they don't drop it all together and simply increase land tier rates, because that is basically what you're doing -- paying land tier in two places.
