Is there a way to squelch that stuff? I'd like to hear the music, other sound effects.. but not the silly voices, baby laughs, etc. Can it be done?

Mute the offending person or object.

Only by muting the people that do it. Unfortunately some really nice people get caught up in those stupid gestures, so you either miss out on talking to some cool people or have to tolerate the silly noises they make.

Ok.. would be nice if blocking those sounds could be included in a future release. I suspect those all make use of some annoying subroutine which parses text to find appropriate nuisance.
Thanks for the quick replies! |

You can expand the lower right sounds controls and turn down/off Sounds.

Yes, I believe that's exactly what gestures do. You might try turning down one of the audio sliders in preferences temporarily. "Sounds" might be the one. That way you can keep the annoying screen filling chat that comes with the gestures but not hear the sounds. And the music would still be up.
I like the occasional sparsely used gesture (Marianne's charming giggle for instance). It only seems to be in clubs that they become abused. [ETA: Or what Osprey says^. That's what I get for trying to chat in world and out at the same time. ![]() . _____________________

Thanks for the quick replies! Those sounds are carried on the same channel as the sound effects like creaking doors, birds, etc that are parts of scenes. They are placed in "gestures" - usually a combination of chat text + sound effect and maybe an animation. You can see how they are done by going into your gestures folder and "opening" one of the items in there. _____________________

Audio has separate sliders for Ambient, Voice, UI, Sounds, Music. What are those specific annoying sounds called? At first I thought it might be one of those types and tried messing with the sliders, but I couldn't find it. |

Thanks for the quick replies! Yes, I guess that's the right one! I thought I tried that, but apparently not. Yay! Free of the sounds! Thanks a ton Osprey and Lissa! |

If you go to, for example, a nature scene where the maker has added bird sounds, babbling brooks, etc., those would affected by the Sounds slider, correct?
Slider-wise, "Ambient" means "sounds produced by Linden Lab" and "Sounds" means "sounds produced by users"? _____________________

Correct
Generally, the only sound I've found affected by "ambient" is the wind. _____________________

...and footfalls. Oh yeah! I have ambient down (I don't care for the sound they pass off as wind) so only notice the "foot" sounds of people wearing shoes with the horse-clop sound added. _____________________

Our default gestures, although actually produced by Linden Lab, include some sounds, but they are triggered by users, so they fall into the "Sounds" category.
Nothing is quite as simple as it could be. _____________________

I would say the use of sound gestures at a club or concert definitely falls under "disturbing the peace" and is AR-able.

gestures, especially those animated ones, are awful. But worse is when someone has that voice garbage animation up high and they look like they have scabies and shingles and spiders and fleas crawling all over them biting and wriggling around.

Some well place, animated only gestures are fine if they fit the conversation. Like hitting a bow or curtsy when saying thank you, is fine. But... the "Hhooowwwoooollll" accompanied by the howling noise and rolling on the ground during a non-animal based conversation? I've wanted to set the land to damage on those.
