In a nutshell, the woman's rl husband came and showed up next door. She never said anything about her being married irl in her profile, but his did - to her. And he was not the gentleman caller that she had been ... entertaining.

The next day, everything was gone from her plot, and the husband's disappeared about a month later.

Yeah. I gather this is pretty common too. As Dez noted - those land barons can't help but know what's going on. My lesson I guess is that your neighbors will know all the juicy details too.

The sad thing is that the husband's profile indicated that their RL relationship extended into SL and they did everything together in SL (*). The wife's profile was that of your typical single woman club goer type. But both had enough RL detail (photos) in their profiles for it to be clear who was who.

(*) By contrast I've met a number of people who have RL relationships, and both RL people might be in SL, but not coupled in SL as they see it as fantasy land / alone time. In fact I've noticed a curious phenomenon of 'SL lesbians' that are RL straight married women who at least claim to not even be bi in RL.

SL Sims are a bit like a trailer park. If you're the trash living there, the rest of us have trouble not being exposed to your gossip-worthy drama.

Not much in Desmond's post was a surprise to me, because a lot of it is stuff nearby residents will pick up on as well.

Number 12 is one of the most important I think.

Nowadays I am on mainland, but in the past I rented estate land. From 4096 parcels up to a homestead. When checking out homesteads for example, I asked for a few quotes, and did some calculations myself. And did not go for the cheapest, because if someone makes US$ 5 per month from my HS rental, I do not believe they have a sensible business model. Rather I pay a bit more to an estate owner, knowing they have their things together financially.

Incidentally, the only time I did not check out the estate owner, and rented a quarter HS sim cheap, I got screwed :-) Which did prove my point.

Thanks Cristalle! I got totally lost about the man next door being her RL husband.

I bet this made for some *Ahem* "interesting discussion" in the RL home. We should copy this to the current "Is it cheating thread," although I think I've heard double posting is bad forum etiquette.

Worst of all, don't 'confer with your partner' in IM for 20 minutes while the land baron stands there. It's impolite. Let him go on his way, and promise a clear 'yes or no' answer within several minutes... while he can get other business done
Many people need much more than several minutes to decide.
I took over a week deciding on the best mainland parcel (I have a very good parcel now and have had it for years)
But I wouldnt need the Baron to waste time showing me the parcels
A simple list of parcels locations available and let me teleport around myself would be easier.

Des missed one thing out...

Don't assume that the landlord is screwing your partner, just because he's incredibly good looking :D

That happened to me (the landlord) once. It turned out to be another tenant who was screwing his partner.

Wasn't intended to be a conspicuous omission... laughs

Though I could think of something quite related. It's going to sound HORRIBLY arrogant, but having talked with some others in the business, both male and female... it's dirt common.

Here's the scenario... a somewhat lonely person (in first life) discovers second life and its social scene, and there is generally a very short list of people they meet in the first weeks. First, people around the welcome area; people around new resident dances and classes, and... the local neighbourhood land baron when they get land. Guess which one looks, at first blush, most like Mr Darcy in an Austen novel.

So this might be the 'take away' for new residents: Even though he might look to be swimming in $L and land, DO NOT introduce yourself with a perfume~stained note to the local land baron, within a month of discovering Second Life.

We get these all the time, and some of the less circumspect land barons will literally pass them around. Female land barons get these too, sometimes from men who think they can help the little lady with their phenomenal business skills and big ideas. Odds are, that little waif of a land baroness can kick your business arse not only in second life, but first life... she doesn't need your 'help' and isn't likely to swoon into your arms. She'll write you off as a gold digger instead.

I've personally seen some real doozies. Imagine an introductory note outlining what acts will be performed, what acts won't be performed and some general land and $L requirements, all inside of three badly spelled paragraphs. It's rare to get a missive that stuns me to silence, but some of these have... hoo boy.

If you send such a note to a land baron and then enquire about it afterward, after no response, he's telling a white lie when he says he didn't get it, the grid asset system ate it, and he's got to log out in ten seconds so he can't deal with it now. The asset server didn't actually eat the note. He's being polite for your sake.

Where do you get a perfumed stained note in SL? Someone once gave me a bottle of SL perfume which I thought odd; I set it out for awhile cause was a pretty bottle, but useless..... I think my profile scares people off, no one ever hits on me 'like that'. :p

If you got one, you would practically smell the Chanel No. 5 dripping from it without any other prompt... sometimes White Diamonds, depending.

A slight synesthaesia helps, but even without it, it's pretty noticeable.

* * * * *

On an unrelated note, it's also possible to get a real good idea of what the writing probably looks like, were it written. Consider the following line of text.

"U got 2 respond 2 me rite now I need ur help only u can do it"

Now, would that be written like this:

http://www.dafont.com/jane-austen.font

Or this?

http://www.dafont.com/anything-you-wan.font

Just saying.

Whew. I prefer Daisy, myself. Or Princess, or J'adore. I also have a soft spot for anything Incanto by Salvatore Ferragamo.

in Caledon, I'd expect nothing less from a romantic entreaty.

yes, Synesthesia DOES help... but it can also hurt =/
