you will need thier key, although if they send you an offline and it goes to your email, you can just reply to it with your email.

I think they have to send your avatar a message first - then you can reply to them if you have IMs going to email. According to this forum posting, these "addresses" only last for a while (so you couldn't keep using it tomorrow, for example). This is just my guess, though.
