Hi.

I think it would be a brilliant thing if we could send messages into SL, even if we're not in the game. Such as if I'm travelling and have to send an important message due to an ongoing project and the only software I have is a web-browser in an internetcafé. Some sort of a IM chat option on www.secondlife.com would be greatly appreciated.

If this option already exists, please let me know.

You can but i think the avatar has to send you an IM while you`re offline first, and then you can only reply to it through email before x amount of hours runs up. I do that all the time.

However last night I was IMing with someone who was offline and after all of his messages it said something about "Yahoo! learn how to send IMs on your phone with Yahoo UK messenger" or something like that.....so that was interesting if he was getting my sl ims on his yahoo messenger.......

Anyway thats all i know of!

I think they're looking into having IMs via the Jabber protocol (which programs such as Gaim and Trillian support). It's an open-source chat protocol and I believe has web-based clients you can use. So that ought to solve your problems if and when they ever finish it :)
