I don't use voice for the simple reason that I'm always watching TV at the same time I'm in SL, and I hate it when people talk over the telly. I have nothing against it per se.

I like it! It's fun...buggy yes, but this is SL HAHAHA

I would never force someone to use it though...how awful!

Thank you.

If all the voicers had your attitude, There would be a lol less people who have issues with voice in SL.

I'll show you the tool.

* unzips *

Just asking, but are you one of the ones running around with giant "tools" erect and discolored? Always "flashing" everything and everyone?

I'd happily use voice if it only worked on my computer. I even bought a headset just to use with voice. Works just fine with Skype. Will it work with SL? Nyet :(

I wonder how many objections to voice are coming from the virtually transgendered? Anyway it is easier to fake an opposite gendered avatar than voice -- it takes you from 50% certainty to 99% certainty -- not perfect, but a big improvement.

But the really big question is:

What if you have a voice that sounds "young"? Some adults sound like they never got out of puberty. Bart Simpson in is voiced by a RL 50 year old woman...

Ironically, I always thought Bart Simpson sounded like a woman.

Edit: Ok, what happened to the message mentioning Bart Simpson, and how "he" is voiced by a woman . . . and there are people that sound young and all that . .. I was responding to that message. Did my message get redirected? Was that an alternate SL forum that I was reading? Am I in an alternate reality now? Did the Cubs still win the World Series last year in this new world I inhabit?

the really big question is ...

what does it matter WHO is behind an avatar?

i'm not being facetious.

since this IS a game, why does it matter?

unless you are treating it more than a game and actually getting emotionally involved with a bunch of pixels on your monitor?

Sometimes it does, for example if someone attempts to convince you they are a certain gender in RL but are lying, a lie is a lie whether it is virtual or not.

Please don't label "voice lovers" as being fanatical, and equating them to religion.

Oh, my ... I like voice and I am a religious person.

Man, how low I must be.

I think he meant "voice lovers" as those that love making love using voice, hence the use of the phrase "voice lovers".

Very true. That is why I prefer to keep RL out of my SL relationships. I don't need to know. we aren't going anywhere near RL for it to matter to me.

Ah, but that's the thing. As I've pointed out elsewhere, there are some people who (1) see SL as a self-contained reality of its own and are not interested in the material-world characteristics of the people they interact with, while there are others who (2) see SL as an extension of their material world lives, and therefore very much care about the person behind the computer keyboard ... and of course mixtures of both.

I have no issues with people who are kind of type (2) and want to pierce the veil of virtual reality into the material world because they are in SL just as an extension of the material world. What I object to are blanket statements by these folks that voice is *objectively* better, because for the type (1) people, it really isn't.

Also it's not accurate to say that people are getting emotionally involved with pixels -- it's always the person behind the keyboard (or how that person is projecting a persona into SL) that is the source of any lingering attraction or feelings, not the pixels.

so if you are attracted to a avatar it's actually the person behind the avatar who attracts you.

regardless of whether the genders match.

edit: since it seems important to the OP that the genders DO match.

Because I can tell if a man or woman is REALLY a man or woman! It makes life less complicated. Ah well, if you don't like it, why complain? Why not just not use it?

Getting back to the original provocative statement: No you still can't tell. I work with a woman who is constantly called "sir" on the phone - and believe me, she is 110% woman (and has two daughters that look just like her).

And frankly it is none of your [expletive] business what gender a person is even if you could tell. What is this, a dating service? Will you be happy if 20% or more of the women just fade away?

Actually I think you were playing the devil's advocate. ;-D

It's not a game to some people.

To some people it's a 3D modeling program with instant messaging.

i agree with weston's insinuation ... many ppl consider sl an on-line dating service.

btw 2k, a sl friend of mine once described sl as an IM service with 3-inch finger puppets.

Hmm... Good point. And I can respect that. I just hope some of them respect that some of us dont.
