ok, I just got approached by someone in SL dressed as a police officer. I was about to report it as abuse, but had to pause as, as far as I know, he wasn't breaking the TOS. this is a copy of the conversation

[11:27] Andreas: Good afternoon Miss.
[11:27] Andreas: Your ID please
[11:28] Andreas: Miss your ID please
[11:28] Andreas: please copy the ID into my inventory
[11:28] You: hey there ... smiles
[11:28] Andreas: for further investigations
[11:28] You: I don't think so ... smiles
[11:29] Andreas: you don't have an ID?
[11:29] You: not one I'm willing to hand out no
[11:29] Andreas: Miss this is serious
[11:30] Andreas: If I can not see an ID from you I have to ask you to follow me to the next police office
[11:30] You: ask away
[11:31] Andreas: Miss I have to arrest you. The SL police assumes that you are playing illegal SL.
[11:32] Andreas: You have now the chance to contact your attorney
[11:32] You: well SL has my ID on file already
[11:32] Andreas: let me double check this
[11:33] You: you do that
[11:33] You: now if you will please excuse me
[11:34] Andreas: miss i have to apologize. i found you. you are registered and your payment infos are already on file. but SL asked you to change yor avator. you have L$ to improve your visual outfit
[11:34] Andreas: please do so
[11:34] Andreas: or I have to give you a ticket
[11:35] Andreas: have a nice day miss

now personally, other than been annoying, I am brushing him off as either an idiot, or words I can't use on a polite forum :)

BUT, there were a lot of newbies around that area, and if he is pulling the same stuff with them, it worries me that they might take him seriously

That's actually kinda funny. It would be going too far if they did that to a new guy and that person actually gave up info or money, though.

Otherwise I think the guy was just goofing around.

looks like an rp'er he seemed to know when to end it and its kinda cute to me anyhow , but then i ahve had superman drop by and ask me if there are any recent crimes to report and an old lady standing waggling her cane in front of my "drug shack" preaching prohibition and another super hero type guy give me his business card for future referance so I could give him a call when any villains show up. A few other things like a mermaid (she was pretty quiet though..)

So maybe i'm used to it but i got a real kick outa the little old lady who looked like yoda in front of my drug shack :) i left her there and had a good chuckle :)

I would have ARrd their ass! Especially if I’d have seen them pull that on a newbie.
There were some goofs at Orientation Island awhile back in FBI garb asking for IDs.
I told them they could find everything they needed in my Profile, asked them what kind a training they got if they didn’t know to look at my profile, and then told them that would be called a CLUE…something they obviously didn’t have. That shut them up and they wandered off.
With all the problems newbies face now…no starting money, no in-world help, this could be one more thing to make a short visit to SL even shorter.

Contributes to the 90% fail-to-retain rate, I'm sure.

He he. I had to chuckle at that. I'd say he was an enthusiastic RPer bordering on taking it too far. With a newbie it could have been trouble. I'll give him credit for being polite and policeman like. You tolerated it about as long as I would have.

This is the part of the conversation that concerns me.

Roleplaying is one thing but when you start talking about things like payment info I feel it crosses into the realm of pishing for real life info.

True roleplaying should not include comments about real life, which payment info is.

In my opinion anything that seems to be pishing for real life info, wether in a roleplaying context or not, is an ARable situation.

I worry about newbies in this situation too...they're probably unaware of the fact that there's no real SL police force, which could result in them being taken advantage of in some manner.

But assuming the guy had no nefarious motives, he really should limit his RPing to people who actually want to play.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

No but as long as that info is displayed in our profiles, it is public information. Personlly it serves me no purpose except to generate a sort of class warfare.

Curious though, why would you consider reporting abuse on that?

This sort of thing is precisely why people running around in uniforms or officious-sounding group tags are mistrusted - most they assume that the simulation of authority gives them that authority, and nothing could be further from the truth.

The chain of authority in SL goes like this:

*The Lindens - they own it, and in SL they are the ultimate authority in all matters
*The Landholders - they pay for the right to control their land and may do as they wish on it
*The Payment Verified Citizens - these citizens have the right to file trouble tickets and access the forums, where the unverified citizens do not
*The Unverified Citizens - they have the right to file abuse reports on legitimate abuses (as do all other citizens)
*The Business Owners (who may also be landholders or Unverified) - they have the right to conduct business in a civil social environment.
*Griefers - they have the right to be reported for bad behavior, muted, ejected from your lands and banned by the Lindens in extreme cases. If they own property, game currency or inventory, they have the right to have any of those things simply deleted as though they never existed.

Additionally, all citizens have the right to speak to one another and compare notes on how they wish to interrelate to one another and how virtual society at their level ought to work.

I don't see "rent-a-cop" in there anywhere.

I don't know about the OP, but my concern is that he was pushing for an ID - real life information - and a new player might actually supply it because they didn't know any better.

Someone should send that cop impersonator down to the red light district.

It's all done up like Amsterdam, with tons of "working girls" and trolls cruisin'

He'd have a ball, and livin' things up a bit.

basically cause I'm worried about newbies getting taken in and giving him ID and such. HE may well be just RPing as some have said, personally I think he took it a tad to far if he was. But worst case scenario, he's not RPing and he is actually phishing. newbies give him their ID which they used to put payment info on, and he goes and does what with it?

these days, just about any damn thing he pleases, isn't too hard with a bit of info to pull up the rest of someones information and go hog wild.

admittedly thats worst case, but you get the idea :)

well i'm not sure anyone would give a guy in sl ID i dont even click on the links in the emails that are supposedly legit just in case. I also from what i read think he is reading profiles before trying this or doing it etc although I could be wrong but its pretty obvious he was using your profile as part of what he/she was doing.

Anyhow next time something like that happens send them a private chat if your worried that is what I would do if its an rp'er your going to get an answer if its a guy looking to scam he will say something strange likely or try to hold up his "police status" in the im's but an RP'er would communicate otherwise in the IM hehe

Honesty I have been approached for a lot of different reasons even "held up" as in a guy asking me for all my lindens that guy went a bit far but quite obviously i didn't give him my lindens lol
