I don't know how to answer this, as the question is not really clear to me...
I make what I *want* to make, exclusively. If I don't make what people want, someone else will, and that is fine. I *do* always save the best for myself, because I tend to do an awful lot of "proof of concept" stuff that's pretty darned cool but not polished enough or user-friendly enough for sale to the public. Sometimes those things will turn into products, most often they do not. . _____________________

![]() How would you define "power"? Influence? Minions? The ability to bend spoons with your mind? Creating content that lots of people use can get someone's name well known and become one you hear a lot, but that doesn't equate to power. _____________________

I'd stand the question on it's head, to answer it:
Does using someone's stuff give them power over you? I'd say: not really, unless you had absolutely no alternative and *had* to use it. _____________________

No, it doesn't give you power; it gives you PLEASURE.
There is nothing more pleasurable in life than creating things other people enjoy. coco _____________________

i said no - other also
usually it gives them power over you, if only temporary, especially in custom content ... in non custom content it may not come up all of the time, but there will be someday, that person that will bend you backwards and what do you do? be a jerk? nah, bad mojo but also the customer doesnt always want what they think they want, so the second poll option doesnt really apply, altho its almost on the mark |

I mean if Yumi is suggesting that, given the fact that the content creators form the "virtual experience" of SL, does that give you a sense of power?
I would have to say no, because there is so much content in SL, the idea that your content reaches a few people inworld really doesn't amount to much, overall. I'm much more concerned with whether people like and enjoy what I make, not that I'm "forming" their experience. Afer all, they *choose* to bring your creation into their experience, not the other way around. I'm honestly flattered when people want what I make to be part of their SL. |

I simply don't see any power involved with purchasing or selling items.
I'm an artist. I like to make stuff. People buy it. Cool. As Io said, it's quite flattering when someone chooses to wear something I made. What was the original POV which brought on this question, and who/what/where is Broken Toys? ~Ari _____________________

I'm a brand-new merchant, but I do it because I enjoy making cool things, I'm flattered that someone else might want them, and I would do it for free, except I need the $L to buy other cool things that other people make. I look at it more as an artistic outlet than a power trip.

I get a nice, warm fuzzy feeling when people buy and use stuff I've made. It helps pay my tier in SL and the little bits that I cash out I put towards my music projects in RL & SL.

To some extent it gives you the power to shape others' experience, by creating things that redefine what residents can do that they couldn't do before. You have the power to give THEM power. For example, my life is changed through having Mystitool, which I use constantly. So Mystical Cookie did have the power to affect my experience of SL. But by enhancing MY abilities.

Coco is right. As far as I am concerned, I still get floored when I see people wearing anything I have made.
I've never felt when I buy from my fav creator that she has some sort of power over me. The same "rules" apply in that relationship as do to my best friends in SL. I'm cool with you until you give me a reason not to be. It doesn't matter if you're Valentino, if you upset me, I'm going to be mad. _____________________

if you want it to give you power. you could technically say that it expands your userbase and makes people more likely to buy future products.

Balancing the books this morning I realized that YES, when people purchase my items it does give me power:
Customer pays for item > I pay the electric company > I have power to run my computer and the lights! ![]() _____________________
