http://www3.capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9738601"I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news but she just smiled and turned away, I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before but the man there said the music wouldn't play and in the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried, and the poets dreamed but not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken and the three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast, the day, the music died......" Wow...talk about timing. I have an event on 7/14 with a DJ!
I think what'll happen is the bill won't pass but then when people actually SEE the effects of the rate hike everyone will ACTUALLY get involved instead of passing links around (no offence to the OP intended...but a lot of people just do this and call it "activisim" in the U.S.).
Otherwise there'll be a new phenomenon...Pirate Internet Radio!

I have called and written to both my US Senators and house reps, one senator has already sent a letter (a form letter) back to me stating there support for the lower fees.
I urge you all to Write, Phone, and email them in your districts too.
And get registered to vote, if your not already, and vote.

Your music, maybe.

In Germany, everyone who plays recorded music as a public performance (bars, discos, even fast food restaurants) has to pay royalties to an organisation called GEMA, our local version of the IRAA. And it's quite hard to get around this law; for example, when the health authorities routinely check a fast food joint and notice a CD player, they often also check if the owner has paid his GEMA fees. Well, these royalty fees have been around since 1947. The music did not die.

From: Avacea Fasching I have called and written to both my US Senators and house reps... I've done so as well, several times. I'm really hoping the Internet Radio Equality Act passes, because it's going to be too damn depressing if all the stations I listen to go dead... I'm hoping that greed won't win this time, as unlikely as that sounds.

From: Brenda Connolly I have a new black dress all ready. Might need shoes though. Minx Feral Kitten really nice n deadly ____________________________________________________________________ i agree Squeeze, many do not know the impact or choose not to know, until they see the fees, here in WA Sen Cantrall was very averse to this bill, as many here in Seattle rely on internet radio for many things up to and including Amberalerts, which were started by internet radio. and pirate radio is nothing new, but it seems to cloud the issue here as well. many confuse internet radio with pirate radio stations, hence the witchhunt. and to clear up further confusion, its not the bill per se that is being protested, its the retro active fees going back to early 2006 that have many in an uproar. some of these fees will cause those that have been paying to keep thier stations running, to close down, as they will add up to millions of dollars. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i too will miss SOMA and Radio Nigel, as well as the French Rap, Ambient, and Meta Stations.but hey we still have time, keep calling Your Sens and Reps, and let them know how important internet radio is to You. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- we now return you to Your regulary scheduled Forum... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.s. Squeeze, for the record, i emailed my local reps, and State, called as soon as i got the notice via my inworld boss, and prior to that, involved my entire complex regarding this and they got motivated as well. activism takes many forms, whether its standing outside a local radio station with signs picketing, or posting in a forum, as long as the word gets out in some shape, form or fashion.

Well, these royalty fees have been around since 1947. The music did not die. I doubt that GEMA is charging those establishments more than 300% of what they take in for the priviledge of playing their CDs. That is what the RIAA is trying to do to the Internet Radio stations. Our broadcast stations stations and satellite broadcasters pay between 0% and 7% of their incomes to royalties -- the Internet Radio Equality Act isn't about Internet radio paying nothing -- it's about treating them the same as the other broadcast media. For the record, I called both my Senators and my Congressman today... the Congressman is a co-sponsor of the Internet Radio Equality Act already so I took the opportunity to thank him. One of the Senators is in the process of sighing on. No commitment (or even comment) from the other Senator one way or the other so far.

Music won't die, but I hope the RIAA does. The time when they were worth anything is long past. Example: What DO they do? Really? Aside from asess fees.
I actually listen to more UK based radio stations online anyway. My current favorite is Virgin Radio. I like the old time rock-n-roll.
I believe teh RIAA is in for a surprise as I don't see this having much of an impact after the intitial changes. At first some people will stop, others will pay the fees. Eventually people will stop paying the fees because tehy will find other means to play the music. Napster anyone? Did the closing of that stop P2P music transfers? *smirks*
Like the song says "Glittery prizes and endless comprimises, shatter the illusion of integrity."

Except, knowing LL, if streaming is banned in america, it will be banned in SL entirely. I suppose its turnabout for the rest of the world slowly trying to get sex banned in SL.

I'd call my senator and all that if i could just read this law and decide for myself, all i can find is people telling me its so terrible and everyone with a different interpretation of what the law will do or not do. Supporting an idea without knowing the facts is stupid.

Does anyone have a link to the actual language of the proposed legislation instead of someone's interpretation of it?

If LL felt they had to ban streaming, it would be significant motivation for them to move to the multiple, jurisdiction-specific grid model. I can't imagine the consumer market of SL surviving without streaming music.

Listening to my friends DJ and play live music is one of the few things that I'm still interested in in SL. Being a Skydancer and getting to chat with my friends are the others - I'm pretty much bored with the rest of SL these days. (If you're curious about what a Skydancer is check out DanCoyote Antonelli's profile in world.)
