Since I very first started secondlife in may, of 2006, I have been living in the Weapon Testing sandbox, along with many people. Back then it was a place where MOST people would just walk up and ask to test weapons, there would be litter, but barely, and it was quiet. Nowadays it is unbarably lound and spammy with the lound roming spongebob followers, and the clutter so extreme you cannot walk more than 5 meters within 10 seconds. It has become more of a trash can than a sandbox and it makes me sad to think of the good times I used to go there. ----------------------------- I dug up a thread I posted when Linden Answers was up, and I got a very VERY disapointing answer: /139/ff/159592/1.html I sadly quote a linden: "We do not come to regions typically just because there are greifers there" I have never felt so abandoned in my life ------------------------------ NOW FOR MY QUESTION: What exactly do lindens come to the sandboxes and help for now days? Now that there is no live help. Do they monitor the abuse reports? And even so, why does it take so long for things to get done? Why does it seem like NO ONE cares anymore. How they can let sandboxes die in secondlife, just like other things. If this doesnt stop, I quit sl.

I feel for you, Joker.
I never did much in a sandbox. For me it was buying land, building, building, building. I taught myself Photoshop, made some horrible clothes until I got the hang of it, then opened a store.
Now less than a year later, things are so glitchy I can't build for fun, or "build" for use in clothing because prims are snapping here & there, random rotations, items disappearing.
Finally had it and went basic. I'm also giving up my land. At this point, a griefer would be a refreshing reason for me to frustratedly log out, but I totally understand where you're coming from.
I hope you get some relief, or find somewhere new & good to be. It isn't that nobody cares.. lots of residents do.

Well I'd be tempted to buy & build a private sandbox island if I actually believed 295 people would be willing to spend $1US a month to use it but seeing the majority of SL users expect everything to be free, it wouldn't happen. People would rather risk griefing, lag & losing everything than pay even $1 to use a safe zone. It's somehow blantantly wrong to pay to play SL.
The only way to sort the sandbox one way or another is to AR every object and keep filing sim down reports till LL get the sh*ts and do something about it, like a 30 minute return policy

Maybe it's their way of thinking that as long as griefers have free reign in a sandbox, they won't spoil the fun in other sims.
Next to that many of the things which would be ARed can be explained away as a honest mistakes rather than malice. This is a sandbox, and whereever someone builds something, errors can happen... And the Lindens may want to spare themselves the trouble of investigating each dispute.

I remember in the old days, people rarely restricted their land. I used to wander around find a nice spot on someones empty land, rez a prefab and take a few images for marketting purposes. Would only be there 30 mins and would allways clear up and no body was any the wiser and no harm was done. Nowadays that is not the case. There are so many free accounts that don't own or rent land it's rare to find any privately owned land that you could rez a prim on. Therefore it seems logical that free account holders would gravitate towards the sandboxes. Ideally, LL owned sandboxes should have increased in qty along side the growth of free acounts to offer people the chance to practice building, but they didnt. Now sandbozes are some of the lagiest, messiest places on the grid. There is at least one remaining that seems pretty secret and is managed well but thats all I am aware of. The rest just seem to be a mess and completely unregulated.

From: Conan Godwin I'd pay for that service, and I suspect others would too. But who would put up the buying price, $US 1675 ?

I also used to wander SL freely. And remember fun in weapons test sandboxes. Now all my land contains a VERY limited access since I have suffered griefing and I have told my SL partner that the next time I am "killed" by a griefer or a crazy squirrel I may not "resurrect" - he can mourn me as a victim of violence and intolerance.

All of the Linden Sandboxes are lag-infested, screaming-follower, prim littered holes in the earth. I've pretty much given up going to them because if you are lucky, you get a chance to rezz a platform to get as far away from the ground before you get perm-falling by some idiot who just *has* to rez the 256m sphere..
I used to love going to the Linden Sandboxes, because I'd see other builders and we'd exchange actual build tips, textures and ideas. Sometimes, we'd wind up competing to see who could build what the fastest or better. Now, most of the good builders are in hiding on griefer free property and while it's kind of amusing to rez the platform and lift it up off the ground.. then have another poor blighted soul join you on the platform so they can rez their own, it's just not the same.
They really need to at least have a Linden 'stationed' at the Island Sandbox from time to time. I mean, they don't have to stay there, but call it home when they aren't dealing with griefing elsewhere. It would sure save a lot of us the work of constantly ARing while we're there.

Sandboxes are and have always been a second rate "government funded" public space. And since these sandboxes are intended for anybody that log in SL, it is more or less what you will find in them, anybody and anything. My feeling is and has always been that the sandboxes should be reserved to newbies, to give them a space to discover the possibilities of SL, not a permanent place that some peoples that are in sl since more than six months believe that they are entitled to.

Sandboxes arent ment for only newbies to go build and learn there. They are communication and work spaces for - as you said - anyone who logs in. If the newbies want a place to develop their skils, and adapt to secondlife, Thats what help island is for

You need to tell the griefers that too The only way for a private owner to justify having one would be to make some sort of profit, having a group owned one could be messy. If you could get 100 people to pay $16.75 each, maybe you could get 10 people to pay $167.50 to purchase. Then trouble would be making sure none of those owners ever did something like sold the land, I wonder if it would be possible to start a group then delete/ cancel the owner so nobody in the group had the authority to ever sell the property, but all the senior owners still had all the other group controls. Then perhaps if you charged $5 entry across the board for a timed 5 hours for all to cover tier and the members all had delete object, eject/ban rights. Maybe junior group members pay $50 to join and get return object & eject rights only. That way there would nearly always be policing present in the sandbox. the owner members may even make a trinkling of money each month after tier is covered.

No one is going to pay an entry fee for a sandbox sadly. But It doesnt really matter. Because I cant blow that much money a month for a sim that will probably be just as bad as the current one, MINIMAL to NO support.
I just wish someone would monitor the curent sandbox like it actually matters
