I connect from South Africa and most of you 'first world' residents would cringe at what broadband costs here-and the pathetic speeds that quilify as broadband in the first place :(

I have a friend in SA who says the same thing pretty much - he also once lost his 512 "broadband" for two weeks because somebody dug up and sold all the copper in his area... time to switch to fibre?

I heard it was just south of the Isle Of Wight but the voices in my head tell LIES! so dunno whether to believe them.

Europe is the mainland, the United Kingdom is a private estate. You want proof?

They'd steal that too :/
The cable theft thing is a real pain, especially in some areas where it happens semi-regularly. My in-laws have been without lines now for just on a month, and they run their business from home. Of course Telkom (our landline telecoms 'provider') still charges them for that month.\

That 512 'broadband' is not even bottom of the line ;) At home I connect on 384kbps, and up until a few months ago the bottom of the range was 192kbps. Te low speed is aggravated by port shaping/prioritization and the fact that we pay per-gig in most cases. I pay about US$10 per gig just for the actual bandwidth, in addition to that we pay mothly access fees and line rental. For a good laugh visit www.telkom.co.za and browse over their ADSL pricing :)

As I said to a UK friend of mine, it says something about ADSL pricing in SA that it's actually cheaper in most cases to use cellular broadband ;) The only problem is latency on those connections makes gaming a bit difficult.

One could conclude that the African continent is barely represented in SL. In almost 4 years of SL, I may have chatted with a grand total of one person on the continent, and this one was an American who claimed to be in Egypt at the time. I guess broadband isn't for the masses out there.

Go check out The Bay and The Cape. You'll increase your exposure to Africans (in Africa) by several hundred percent. :)
