Hi All, Thanks in part to the advice I got when I asked about first land, I now have a pleasant little lot with a pretty nice freebie home on it. It's not much but it's home. I have encountered one small issue though. I am a klutz. 3 or 4 times now while I have been trying to rearrange/move/pick up furniture, I have accidentally zapped my house back into inventory. Leaving the furiture to hover in mid air. I don't suppose there's a way to prevent this, other than me slowing down and paying more attention to what I'm working on, huh? (like a way to lock the house in place?) Thanks, Brewer

Actually, there is - go into Edit mode, select the house; then in the build menu click on "more", then click on the "Object" tab - on the upper left you'll see a list of checkboxes, one of them says "Locked". Click that, and the house will be locked - you won't be able to edit or move it until you unlock it

*giggles* Happened ohh so often to me too . But there something do against that. Right click the part of the house and go to edit. In one of the windows there should be an option "lock". Check that option. That should prevent little accidents like that.... BUTTTTT it is the way how I learned to move objects around and arrange them very precisely . Good luck Morwen.

Another thing to be careful of is practicing building near your house. In an attempt to hurriedly delete a cube I had just created I quickly deleted my house even while ignoring the confirmation box presented because it was a locked item!
Argh! That was no good. I had to go buy another one.

If I had a nickle for every time I've done that I could buy another plot of land! You're right, it is pretty funny to see perfectly arranged rooms full of furniture, pictures, carpets and such hanging in the air.

Argh! That was no good. I had to go buy another one. I bet you uttered words not fit for man or avatar to hear...- More seriously if you need to practice builds on a developed plot try rezzing a prim take up a few meters above your build height, extend the prim to 10 by 10 square by about 1 meter thick, drag out a few copies and link them together (max links that work is 9 in a square) and open the link set and set the height level to about 240 meters (just above cloud level) and fly up to them and practice there, knowing your build below is safe. Also this does insure a degree of privacy if that is needed. Regards John

How can I unlock my house
02-05-2007 09:42
AFter reading about locking a house to keep it from being deleted, especially when building, I did this, on part of it, as I finished build. Note: I was building for re-sale purposes. Now I need to unlock to make adjustments, and I do not know how. Can somebody please tell me how to unlock the first half of my completed house> Thank you.

Just Edit the build again, go to the object tab, and turn off the Locked check-box. That's the one edit you can do to a Locked item. And I also managed to pick up part of my multi-part house while building inside it once. And it was awkward, because it was a house that comes as a conglomerate object.. so everything had to be re-aligned.

Is there a way to set the coordinates in an object so when you take it back into inventory and then bring it back out it will be in the same location, rotation, etc. as when you took it? I intend to create several designs for my lot and rotate them over time and this would be so useful.

One way is to record the information, put it in a script, and put the script into the root prim. The script sets the position and the rotation of the object. Details left as an exercise for the student lee

If it's totally linked, easiest way is to set it out where you want it and then
Edit > more > object tab.
Record the x,y,z coordinates and then go back to the first tab (sorry don't recall the name on it) and put the coords in the second line (description line).
Then, when you put it out again, place it wherever, take the coords and type them in the xyzs again.

The best way to have a house that you can set up in precise position, time after time, is to use Builder's Buddy, Rez Foo, or some similar product on a house that you have mod/copy rights for.
Place a "foundation stone" somewhere on the parcel, consisting of a single cube prim set almost flush into the ground. Set the rez box for your builds on that foundation. Set up the rez box so it memorizes the positions of all the pieces, relative to its current position.
If you adjust everything with the rez box on a foundation block like that, you can swap builds quite easily. I did that for one parcel I used to have, and literally left the foundation block in-place as the "corner stone" of the build. In a multi-use parcel, one build might put a corner of the house there, another might put the base of a fountain at that location, etc...

I lock *everything* I'm even slightly fond of, because I'm a doofus and the moment I don't lock something, I'll be camming about and either not hit all the right keys, or a bit of lag will confuse things and all of a sudden I'm not moving my camera around but relocating my house to the other side of the sim... As a result, all the art I sell in my gallery is locked down. I've had to move it back out of the lake a few too many times. I have a large sign explaining that to potential customers, and how the 'locked' value transfers to new owners and they need to 'unlock' it themselves if they buy something (Why is that?! I'm sure it shouldn't be that way) - but there's still a steady trickle of offline IMs demanding their money back because they can't move a painting they bought So, whilst locking is a godsend for those who, like me, apparently operate their keyboards with their fists, do be warned that no amount of notices/warnings/notecards will overcome your few customers who don't get around to reading the notes you supply and don't know about the lock toggle.

02-06-2007 07:02
Yumi Thanks for responding to my post. I tired what you said to do, and when I entered object tab, everything was grayed out. It will not let me turn off the locked item box. Anymore suggestions? Please I really dont want to start all over again with new build on bottom half. Thank you
