I am using a older viewer and I have windows and I have noticed major lag when changing textures but I haven't experienced exactly what you have.
I notice also when textured joined objects it doesn't seem to want to texture everything like I use to do it.

From: Sandy Carver I tried sitting in my fridge with my laptop, but every time I close the door the light goes off and I can't see what I'm typing. you don't type by the light of your monitor like the rest of us? ok fine, get a usb light.... or saw the little button off that the fridge door presses when you close it.... does yours make a ggod seal? air tight? hope you can hold you breath....
