Hullo all,

I've sent in a help request on this, but haven't heard back and was wondering if anyone here has any advice.

Yesterday, SL crashed for me, one of those ugly, had to force-shut-down my computer crashes. After the dust settled, I tried to log back on, but each time I froze at "connecting to region" (the loading bar stopped halfway). Once I waited a full ten minutes, so I don't think I was impatient.

I uninstalled/reinstalled SL, with the same results. This morning, I tried again, with the same results. A check with one of my friends revealed that the region is, in fact, up.

I use a Intel Celeron 410, 1.46Ghz with 504 RAM, Windows XP installed, and a DSL connection (ISP is up, of course)

Any ideas?

First, check your ram.. I can't figure how you can get 504 mb of RAM. Might need a new chip. (Also, take this with a grain of salt, I'm not a comp tech.. but I always thought it was 512 mb for SL.)

Second, try this: Chose a different region to log into. Go to the login, press "Preferences" and in the main menu, go to "Show start region in login" or something like that and then close out preferences. Then, at the login screen, use the pull down and go to "Type region name" and put in Pooley.

*crosses fingers for you* Hope that the second one helps!

Drat, I was really hoping that would work, but no :( Still freezes up halfway through "connecting to region"

I know, 504 Mb is a bit on the low side, but I've been playing SL successfully since November. I don't even think it's the new update, as I had played for several hours prior to the incident.

Well after a day of talking to support in my spare time, still no answer on this one :( I sent them copies of my SecondLifeLog, DxDiag and ran the WinMtr program. I suppose it's wait and see now.

I'll preface the following with the observation that TechSupport was very prompt in getting back to me by early afternoon. Still, two days ago, I was all set to start shopping for a new computer and learn Blender for sculpties and such. But on days like this, I really wonder if that is such a good idea. Why invest money and spare time on such an unstable platform? If I can run it on my laptop that I have anyway, that's one thing. But actually paying a fair amount of money to play a game that might not work or even be there on some random day?

I know these feelings are hardly unique, and perhaps when things are up and running (*cross fingers*) I'll feel differently. But right now, I'm just frustrated.

I was hoping someone had some good advice on this, because I don't, but sure wish I did.

Could it be another app running, that's eating up bandwidth? Stabbing in the dark here.

SOMEONE must have had this problem... anyone?

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, paste all events you think might be relevant to the crash here.. if in doubt, paste it. Same for your system log.

This isn't terribly easy to do as you can't just copy and paste. The useful information would be the event type, source, and Event ID. Event's description if you're really bored/patient. Also the last status message on the second life login screen before it hangs.

I had that message yesterday too, on a Pentium D Dual Core with 1 gig of ram and Vista installed.

It was SL being its usual self, the grid had pretty much ground to a halt and everyone was affected. I got on no problems today... last night was a doozy for SL bugs, lots of problems after the last update.

Have you tried logging into a different sim? Sometimes I would choose one of the snow sims that are empty most of the time. Zermatt is a good one - empty Linden sim. You can do that via your preferences, in the General tab.

Another thing that occurs to me - disk space - with such a tiny amount of ram, you're going to have a busy swap file.. how's the free space on drive C look?

Thanks for the help!

Troubleshooting--

I've been trying every four hours or so, so it's not just a last night thing. Tried just a few minutes ago (don't want to waste people's time, in case it had fixed itself)

I have uninstalled/reinstalled SL.

I've tried logging into three other regions, via the entry page and directly.

Turning off all other programs/apps didn't work. Per support's suggestion, I also disabled Norton Anti-Virus, without result.

I have 43/63.4 Gb available on the C file.

Looking through events, the only out of ordinary ones when I tried log-in were

Error IPNATHLP:
The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.

and
Warning Dhcp:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0014A56E71FF. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Again, thank you all very much for the help!

Curious if you have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) enabled on the machine, and if so, why. (Do you really need it? Are you sharing your Internet connection through that machine?)

Also would like to see the output of ipconfig

Start/Run/cmd

c:> ipconfig <enter>

And while you're there in the command shell, try this:

c:> ping sim4082.agni.lindenlab.com <enter>

Tell us if you get output that looks like:

I do share this connection, but I was the only one on during all the failures.

Yes, I got that (bytes 32, time from 49-51, TTL 56)

Sorry, not sure what you mean by that. What is a slider bar, and where should I be looking for it?

It's definitely my computer. I borrowed a computer (an Apple G4) and hooked it up to my connection, and SL ran just fine with my account on it. But all other rpograms and the internet work just fine.

I uninstalled SL on my computer and loaded it again, but no luck.

I am beginning to wonder if my computer became obselete with this latest SL upgrade. But if so, why did it run fine on Wends and most of Thurs?

If you haven't powered off all components in the system, perhaps going so far as to unplug them, to make sure they aren't in some sort of standby state, you might try that. That would include any routers, switches, modems, etc.

Might not help but it won't hurt and it is easy to do.

You might try connecting to SL with all firewalls, anti-spy, anti-malware, etc. deactivated. Of course check to see that all anti-malware programs have been told to keep their hand off of SL.

If you are using Internet Connection Sharing, you might try running the network wizard again.

The 504 Mb figure suggests an integrated onboard video system that is using 8 megs of system ram for video purposes.

When you are on the login screen, you can use the Preferences button, and then the About button on the bottom left of the preferences screen to see some info about your system.

What does the About Second Life dialog display for Graphics Card Vendor and Graphics Card?

I know you said that you uninstalled and re-installed, and I am not sure if the cache folder is removed and created again during this process. If not then clearing your cache may help. I have seen this exact symptom fixed instantly with clearing of the cache.

You might want to make sure you have removed the settings.xml file so that you are starting with a fresh undamaged one.

On a default window install of XP, the settings.xml file is located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml

Might try updating video drivers and any other drivers such as motherboard and chipset drivers, etc.

Can't hurt to try running checkdisk, Start Run chkdsk /f .

HURRAH!

Kenbro's guess was correct! I just signed on after clearing the cache. I would have thought uninstalling would have done that, but no....

Well, I hope we have all learned a lesson, don't be shy about suggesting clearing your cache, even though it feels like suggesting that one should breathe.

I just got a Piggy Box, didn't make the connection between the last post's Laser Piggies and the Piggy Box, and deleted it assuming it might be something bad.

There's probably a lesson to be learned from that, but I'm not sure what it is

Sorry everyone--should have IM'd you before sending it. Laser piggys are an extemely silly thing I make, and I was feeling a bit giddy. They're, um, ridable steam powered mechnical pigs with laser eyes and steam rockets. Just wear it (it's an attachment vehicle like a horse) and type "start" to get the animation going. I can't really imagine WHY you would want one, but I was rather giddy/happy last night and wanted to thank everyone for their help SOMEHOW.

Oh, in the inbox, I got the "Final Solution" from Tech Support--

From: someone

Hello

After looking at your DXDIAG, I can see that you have a Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset, I am sorry to say that we do not support this card set as is stated here

The only thing I can suggest is to ake sure you have the most uptodate drivers, You may need to contact your computer company for updates.

Well, despite my down feelings yesterday, I'm still going to get a better computer with a card that is supported. But the answer did feel a bit dismissive--after all, I had run SL for 6 months prior to this. And as it turns out, that wasn't the issue. I feel as if I got hit from behind when parked at a traffic light, then told it was my fault because I needed to replace my tyres!

Ah, well, it all works now :D Thanks again, everyone.

And to add insult to injury, I scared everyone off from getting the piggie boxes... sowwy! I am teh paranoid...

Ok, whoever got one of these things and deleted it, you NEED to ask kindly for another one. This is the most insane thing I've ever seen. I LOVE it. I did an entire downwind/crosswind/final on my neighbor's airfield, Mr. Lahar Broadway, walked over to him and kindly asked if there was a landing fee. "Not for flying pigs". Giggles ensued.

Thanks Viirginia. Much fun will be had with this.
