Better? Are you kidding me? Sure, people who are wearing crappy, overly bright and awkwardly placed facelights look better with local lights off. And when you're in an environment built by people who didn't know what they were doing, it might be even best to switch your monitor off altogether. But a well-textured, well-lighted environment viewed with local lights enabled looks MUCH better than anything you can see with sun and moon only.

I thought offering a option that I found to work was okay. I didnt realize I should go into faults, sorry.

All right, more gradually then...baby steps over time instead of one big leap now. And it's not nice at all. Don't get me wrong, I can see the potential, but if LL thinks it's anywhere near ready for RC, let alone alpha, they need to stop sniffing the marker fumes and go get some fresh air.

Gaming technology doesnt move in gradual steps unfortunately - it tends to move in leaps and bounds and SL stands a real chance of being left behind at the moment. Project Entropia for instance - the closet thing to a competitor that SL has perhaps? - has licensed the crytek engine which is capable of virtually photorealistic scenery.

But the client is only the tip of the iceberg - theres loads of other things that really need to be overhauled to bring SL up to date. The asset server is too slow - Eve online which is similar in terms of concurrent users online - uses solid state disks to for its database which gave them something like a 4000% increase in data access speed when they implemented them in 2005.

Netcode is another bugbear - you know yourself how laggy SL can get. This was solved to a degree in 2004 when SOE released Planetside - capable of having over 400 players battling on the same map - it wasn't perfect but it did work. Webzen who are due to release Huxley this march are promising maps that can handle 200 players without any odd effects due to lag (I'll be very interested to see how they pull that one off ;) )

I think SL is pretty cool - don't get me wrong - its fun to buld your own stuff and wander around and see what others have made. But IMO it needs to be much faster, harder and better looking if its going to keep up.

Ok, just to show I'm not nuts.... took this just now in the WL default as soon as I logged in. I didn't edit it... that's what I see....I do wear a face illumination at all times which helps a lot in any lighting.

OMG! What did Windlight do to yer hair?!?

Then they need to make the lighting changes subtler. I admit I don't know how the technology works; what I do know is that Windlight, as it is now, substantially decreases my enjoyment of SL. If they roll it out in its present form - which makes all of the things I care about look worse, rather than better - I'll be spending less time in-world and will likely not renew my two Premium accounts when they expire. I'm not paying for something I find frankly ugly.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Ann, I'm sorry you feel that way. I really LIKE WindLight...even at the default settings. Maybe I simply have no taste. :)

I like Windlight, too. I'm just not a very detailed kind of person so I don't notice all the differences people are seeing and talking about. I'm also not into building and creating... I can see how even minute differences would be irritating in that case.

I just wish people would be able to see our avs the way we intended them to be. With all the different viewers and settings, I have no idea how or what I even look like to others. I suppose all that matters is what _I_ see on the screen, so if for what ever reason what you see on your screen is fugly using FL, I certainly understand someone leaving for that reason.

The gama is set too high...I have to decrease it on many of the settings....but over all I find that things look beautiful in windlight. Part of the coolness of WL is being able to adjust your own atmosphere and I think that's what they were going for. SL is based on giving it's players/members control over their world.....so, in a nutshell, windlight accomplishes just that.

But again, it all depends on why you're in SL to begin with. I don't really care how anyone else sees me...I like what's on my screen....and unless I'm ruthed or otherwise compramised by some odd texture or pose glitch...it's really a non-issue. My vanity just doesn't extend that far. *shrug* But, the reason I DO enjoy windlight so much is because for me it's all about the visual experience, and being able to control it. That has always been the appeal of SL for me....and continues to be with windlight. I love messing with the settings.... but that's just me. *shrug*

No offense, but I don't find that to be a particularly flattering shot. Your nose is crumpled, your upper lip has all but disappeared, and the shadows on the side of your face are far too dark, even with the extra light. The brows look sort of faded to me too, but that could just be the skin.

Anyhow. From the replies in this thread it seems that content creators have the most issues with Windlight. Which isn't so strange, because good content creators have always tried to make content suited to ALL circumstances. And that will be almost impossible to do with Windlight.

You know, I also love Windlight. It brings great depth to the game. But how do I remake my textures from now on? Does anybody have a guide for the most used settings? And why, if people obviously need to adjust, doesn't LL do it right from the default start?

I want Windlight to see the light of day, as I'm sure other content creators will too. But why oh why don't they make the default settings with less contrast and more predictability, so we at least have some kind of certainty that most users will see our hard-worked products and textures well. As I see it now, I will have to remake at least 30% of my textures, maybe more. I don't care about the upload money, but does anyone know how much time this will cost?

Well the skin looks fine but gawd I had no idea windlight could do that to someones hair, looks like a damn medusa, and it makes your top look like some sort of serpent.

Use the default settings for windlight from a fresh install - these will be the ones most residents will use.

And having to redesign to incorporate new technology is just one of those things. Web designers have had to put up with it for years. 98% of the world uses Internet explorer but web designers are still expected to design their sites 2 or even 3 times to cater to netscape or opera, or whatever fad browser of the week has come into fashion. Web servers will upgrade their server scripting languages and bork your site if some of your old code is not compliant with the new installation. The list goes on....

The internet is an evolving animal and at the risk of sounding perhaps a little harsh- in SL its time to adapt or die

Well the skin looks fine

It's too brightly lit down the center of the face, causing the details to get lost, and too shadowed on the sides. That's not 'fine.'
