Hello Sheena, I can't believe I've found your question unanswered!
If you've not had an upgrade, the chances are you have 2*512Mb cards. You need to either consult your original invoice/bill or remove your cover to inspect how many slots you have and what kind of memory it is. There have been many architectures of memory during the recent frenzy of development so it is vital you get the right pin configuration at least. If you are lucky enough to have say, four slots with two occupied by 512's then you can simply purchase an additional 2 to fill the remaining slots. However, more likely is you only have two slots and thus to get to a total of 2Gb , must purchase 2*1Gb cards to replace your present pair. I hope this helps. Bilbo99 ![]() |

With system ram, my advice is use matched pairs (same manufacturer, speed etc), depending on the available memory banks (slots) you have on your motherboard. Taking care in the configuration of how you fill those banks and in which order. If you are unsure, either take it to a respected outlet and get them to install it, or remove any existing memory chips and install a large single one on bank 0. Some memory configurations may require updating the system BIOS. Heh heh, hi neighbour ![]() |

MEMORY: (Req.DDR2 MainBoard)1GB (2x512MB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory Just to reiterate .. if you have two additional empty slots of the same type for memory, you can add .. otherwise, replace. |

take a stick of memory with you to go shopping. you might need it when they start asking technical questions.

If you carry a stick of memory around, be sure to keep it in an anti-static bag if you want to use it again.
Y, the evidence for a memory leak is definitely mounting. ![]() That's good news, frankly -- it means that there's a good chance that it'll get fixed in an upcoming release. It also means that until then, a periodic relog at a convenient moment is a good idea. Sheena, 1G really should be enough to run SL well. It sounds like doubling your memory will just mean that it'll take about twice as long to crash. However, I've never heard anyone add memory and then complain! BTW, folks: when buying a new computer -- especially laptops -- it's usually a lot better financially to buy the computer with the minimum amount they provide, and immediately upgrade through an on-line memory vendor. Ask your friendly neighborhood geek for help, and make sure you buy lifetime-warrenty parts from a reputable dealer & manufacturer. Either upgrade right away to half the total memory supported and using only half the slots, or go all the way. You see, when you buy a computer with memory installed they a) charge you considerably more than it would cost you to buy that memory, and b) use up all the slots, which makes the memory cheaper for them but means you have to throw it all away when you upgrade It's an "ignorance tax" -- you pay for your lack of technical knowledge. Cheers, Jeff |

Sheena, if you post exactly what kind of computer you have, we can recommend a link for memory. If you want to save a few bucks, that is. It'll be quicker to hop down to your local tech shop.

(or possible one specific event) I did an unintentional Sit last night, and had been regularly monitoring Free RAM and Client size for several hours. Well, I ended up sitting halfway into a wall and the Client went Super Nova. RAM went down from 280MB Free to 14MB. Try as I might, I could not repeat the problem though. I guess this thread should have been posted originally in a forum that a Linden reads. Oh well! :-| |

Lear Thank you so much for your response. I purchased my system here http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/sp3.asp?v=d I upgraded the CPU and Memory and speakers and video card, The mega 3 is the one I purchased and I would be most grateful to you if you could tell me what type of memory I need for this tower ![]() _____________________

For 2 slots filled out of 4, equaling 1Gb total memory, you have two 512mb sticks in there now and their running in dual channel setup. You would want to match what you have in there now by adding another two 512mb dual channel memory sticks. If you add only ONE 1Gb stick, it will throw your computer out of dual channel mode into single channel mode which isn't nearly as fast or efficient. Make sure to get the same speed of memory as what you have already also... its written on the side of the memory sticks you have in there.
