Oh I see. You learn something every day.
Cropped hair is a good look on girls though. I wonder if any skin designers have bothered to corner that bit of the market?

I would LOVE to get a cropped hair cut for my female avatar, but I haven't seen anyone who offers that option in skins.

I've given up finding even a short-cut style of prim hair for women and only buy men's hair anymore. Naughty Designs has some great short cuts that work just fine on my avatars.

Although women have many, many more skins to choose from than men do, the range of appearance offered is rather narrow. It's heavily skewed to lots of makeup, the SL pinup gurrll look. There are far fewer no-makeup or low-makeup skins or boyish hair cuts.

Gosh, everyone is so helpful here. :)

I have a few more questions, if that's ok.

With skins, is the facial hair they give you determined by the hair on your head? Or do you have to somehow match the two up?

Also, is there a place I can go that specializes in helping newbies with their avatars?

Prim facial hair is like prim nails or prim eyelashes, they suck basically and are a waste of lindens IMO!

I have not seen many skins that are mod but the key is to get a nice shape that is mod so you can mod your look the way you want it. I would buy skin with facial hair if you want facial hair but the prim attachments do not stay close to your avi and most the time they unattach everytime you log out and back in. I bought some prim nails and prim lashes and it was a huge waste!

Matt im me in world and I will be more than happy to help you out with skin and shapes.

Absolutely. After six months making my human avatar as realistic and impressive as possible, I developed a new found appreciation of newbie skins and appearance sliders. I've noticed some oldbies (2003/2004 signups) who have done amazing things with them - maybe due to the limited options available when they first arrived - and who look far more unique than the photorealistic clones you see around. ;)

I just don't want people to label me as a newbie if I'm wearing my skin...

If you buy a skin with the tattooed on hair mentioned earlier, the facial hair, brows, and other body hair will be in similar colors. If you choose prim hair, that's sold entirely separately and can be whatever color you like, contrasting or complimenting the skin's facial hair.

I'm fairly certain there are places which help newbies assemble their look, but I don't know any names off the top of my head. I'm a proponent of do-it-yourself, though...it takes a little longer, but it's all you. There's no harm in asking for opinions, of course, but why pay for them? I might also be concerned that those services have certain places they favor and you wouldn't see everything the grid has to offer.

Anyway, I'm going to counsel caution again...take your time and look around before you commit to anything. :)

Edit: If you're absolutely desperate to escape the newbie look, Pixel Dolls in Port Seraphine has a shop upstairs called 'Avatar' which sells complete avs, male and female, for only 250L. This includes the outfit, accessories, shape, hair, skin, eyes, and animation override. You may not want to keep it forever, but if you can find one you like for the interim, they're definitely a step up from the newbie look.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.
