Its been done before in There.com, although I will never publiclly admit to ever playing that game.............. much.
I shall never use it, it was a pain then and I dont see it changing. Having some person screaming obsenaties in my ear (speakers not an option with a family nearby), typing all I hear through the headphones (the ears are stereo, the brain is mono). Listening to my eardrums perforating as a high pitch crackle due to someone who thinks feedback is a useful way of gaining attention. Having to copy/paste convos to all those who don't have headphones, and 'speaking for them' as they don't have a Microphone. Not being able to save and or prove abuse etc because they did it on voice chat, unless I can get an independant witness. Being asked great questions like, "have you got any spare change?", " give me your clothes I want them (Arnie delusionist)", "You dont sound like a red fox in RL voice" etc.. etc... I'll stick to playing soothing music through my headphones.

I think the concerns about this feature are legitimate. But 3D voice is inevitable. I think it will really change the business landscape of the game. I'm very interested to see the transition.

From: Rockwell Ginsberg I think the concerns about this feature are legitimate. But 3D voice is inevitable. I think it will really change the business landscape of the game. I'm very interested to see the transition. we kind of talked this one to death .. and beyond. Really just recently. Just page back some. Basically theres three camps - the ones who are all for it , the ones who could care less, and the ones who think there was no need for this feature. Some people will be hurt by voice. Others will enjoy it. Some people are very closed minded about the other sides veiws. I figure most of the negatives will happen early on. Eventually through fixes and social adjustments they will calm. Of course there will still always be those who use a built in voice system to be rude and nasty. yay
